Printer Sharing ....
« on: July 03, 2003, 10:21:56 AM »
Can anyone PLEASE help with "printer sharing" on a simple Ethernet network?

My Macs are a 9500 and a G3 (b/w).

Both machines are IDENTICAL as far as OS (9.0.4) and all applications are concerned.

However, the printer connections are different.

PowerMac 9500
USB - "hp LaserJet 1200n"
Serial - "Epson Stylus Color 1520" (this is an A3 printer with Ethernet, SCSI and Serial ports.)

PowerMac G3
USB - "hp DeskJet 845c"

Without buying any extra convertor/adaptor cables etc., is it possible to access all the printers from both machines?

I guess I could connect the G3 to the Epson Ethernet port, but I'd lose connection to the 9500. This may solve a short-term problem but, the I need a long-term remedy!

Thanks Everyone
(I hope)

Thank you Kelly,

I will read, learn and inwardly digest your 'links'.

It's Friday night here in England and I'm (still) p*****d off that Henman has lost at Wimbledon and that, (to add insult to injury) the AUSTRALIANS and the FRENCH beat us !!!! .

At least I can blame the English weather.

I don't (usually) follow Tennis but, if it is "ENGLAND" v "The Rest Of The World" ; I hope America WINS.

Regards

Hope the links you got will help. Apple did a pretty good job of enableing Printer Sharing, even in OS 9. But it is not made easy by some of the 'hoops' the printer makers force on us.

My wife (and I) both like the Brother, USB laser printer. But the only way to share it is to have it connected directly to her iMac, it does not like being on a hub. I still sometimes lose it and have to go through the Sharing CP, dump the listing, and have it search the 'neighborhood' and select it again. I must also be sure that her machine has started up before mine.

She can much more easily share the Epson 900 because it is connected to the USB hub for 'all' to see.

The main thing is to be sure both machines have exactly the same OS and Printer Sharing Extensions, sounds like you've got that covered. You can probably get by with only adding a USB hub (get a powered noe, if possible) and they aren't expensive.

Good luck!

BTW, you might appreciate the a conversation I heard yesterday. A reporter was talking to a Scotsman about the multiple terms they have for wet, rainy, grey weather. Then he asked how many they had for the type of weather they were experiencing (bright, sunny, not-too-warm) in Washington, DC that day. The Scotsman quickly replyed, "We don't ever have this kind of weather!" jawdrop.gif
