« on: September 05, 2012, 06:45:00 PM »
Hi,

Think i found a "relative" stable System for Music (OS 9.2), no crash recording  whith the DA  untill now....

Jus a few problems... sometimes the apple menu icon get scrambled (maybe not a big one..)

Copyng files whith the finder sometimes stop ( but mouse always active...) ...obliged to reboot

Can you help me whith that ?

Maybe the last one  using OS 9 today.... smile.gif

Found an interesting page on OS 9.  One of the suggestions for your problem involves having the Iomega Driver installed:

QUOTE
Iomega Driver problems

A greater number of hang ups while in the middle of copying a file in the Finder seems to occur when this extension is installed and you can't shutdown your computer because the Finder complains it is busy copying the file when clearly it isn't doing anything. Transferring files over the network between an OS9 G3 and OSX G4 Macintosh computer can cause the same problem while copying files from one machine to the next and it is usually the case when the Iomega driver has been loaded up on one or both machines. It seems to be common with version 6.x of the driver using either the extension or the Guest tool.

## UPDATE ##

The "hanging in the middle of copying a file" problem (actually it occurs at the very beginning or end of the file copied (observable after forcing a quit of the Finder and using the Get Info on the file remnant) is worse when SimpleText 1.4 is left idle in the background and you perform a copying of a file in the Finder.

Another idea is to rebuild the desktop: (this from a MicroSoft page)

QUOTE
Before you rebuild your desktop, use the Extensions Manager to save a record of the extensions that are currently turned on. To do this, first open Extensions Manager in Control Panels. Click the Sets short-cut menu, and then click Save Set. When the Save Set dialog box opens, type a name for your currently selected extensions (for example, "My Extensions"). When you close the dialog box, the name of your set is added to the Sets menu.

Turn off all extensions. Click the Sets short-cut menu again, and then click All Off.
Restart your computer while holding down COMMAND+OPTION.
When you see the Are you sure you want to rebuild the desktop file on the disk Disk Name? dialog box, release the COMMAND+OPTION keys, and then click OK.
When the desktop is rebuilt, click the Apple menu, and then click Control Panels.
    Open Extensions Manager.
Turn on your extensions by clicking the Sets shortcut menu and clicking the name that you gave your set of extensions in step 1 (for example, "My Extensions").
    Restart your computer.

Suggest you read through this page for other ideas on how to deal with OS 9, especially look for the section titled "What can I do to fix the OS9 problems?"

http://www.sunrisepage.com/computers/macclassic/macos9.htm

Giving the Finder extra memory might do the trick and that is described on that page.

My memory of 9 is fading fast.... wish I could give myself extra memory.   smile.gif

Had a lot of set up whith Conflict Catcher...iomega driver is not loaded, no ATI  driver also

There's another thing whith plug in in my sequencer, some of them don't show all the details, buttons to change settings are not present...? could it be something whith NVIDIA Video card i'm using?

Thanks for the  OS9 stability link,  but most of it talks  about G3 , maybe for the G4 DA too?

Agreed, on both counts.

I had reason to recall 8.6(!) the other day and I couldn't even dredge-up an image even of what it looked like.

Of all the advantages of OS X.a.b.c.....z not having to go through the legendary Conflict Catcher Drills is, for me, the most pleasant. Rebuilding the Desktop is, perhaps, 2d on that list.

Memories.....memories.

No, fortunately, they don't make them like they used to!

I not too long ago attended a reunion of employees, all formally with a now defunct hi-tech company, and was handed a tee shirt embossed with the following

"THE OLDER WE GET THE BETTER WE WERE"

Seems to fit nicely here.

I liked 8.6.  Think it was one of the best pre-X OSs.   I especially liked the fact that you could really customize the look of the system with Kaleidoscope.  I had a lot of fun creating my own skins with Designer Studio.  Sometimes the old days were better, at least in some small respects.

Can't go to 8,6 whith the DA, always whith OS 9.2...working whith sequencer and audio, get often that same  problem, ...

Trying to export audio from the sequencer  , get a crash....rebooting , reloading the sequencer and exporting the same audio  is ok ?

Do you see what can cause this problem and what to  do to correct it  Thinking.gif

Only thing I can suggest is to give the applications involved, including the Finder, as much memory as possible.   huh.gif

Hey GR,

Maybe reinstall the Sequencer software? Otherwise, IAW Krissel to assign as much memory as possible to those apps. Caveat is that there's only 1.5 GB RAM possible in the DA.

And with the earlier mention of file copying, I do vaguely remember that the larger the file, the more problems I had copying files in 9.x, but my memory is worn...

I dunno.... Thinking.gif

Not much help.

Before exporting the audio file, just quiting and reloading the sequencer , exporting  audio is ok...what does that means?

I'll try to give more memory to the sequencer but  for the Finder ...a bit afraid , never used Res edit sad.gif

Thanks for your suggestions
