Checking actual URLs for links in Mail
« on: February 08, 2013, 09:28:38 PM »
I was helping my wife see the difference in the URL of a link in an email that she already thought was bogus. She uses 10.8.2 on her MBP (a couple years old). But I noticed that the little URL display that comes up when one hovers the mouse over a link stays on her screen as long as the mouse doesn't move off the link. That's great, it gives the viewer all the time they want to read it.

On my iMac, however, it displays and fades out almost instantaneously. Now, my Mac's cpu is probably running at least double hers. But I don't think that matters, there doesn't seem to be any timer running while her pop up is displaying; it is based solely on where the cursor is.

Anyone know of a way to set that in a variable/preference? I've not found anything in my searching (which may not mean anything, anyway wallbash.gif ).

Now, kimmer, this is an example of a real and serious problem, completely unlike your Full Screen whining!! tongue.gif

OK, 'splain me this:

I started this thread with a very serious and frustrating problem about the pop-up display of the actual url when hovering one's cursor over a link in Mail. I will ignore the lack of solutions offered for the time being (the Admins will be receiving a letter from my lawyer soon enough!).

As a matter of fact, I may have discovered a 'solution' myself. With extreme finesse and highly skilled movement of said cursor, I can (usually) make the display last for indefinite periods of time. The "sweet spot" seems to be the 'underline' of the link/URL. Naturally, hovering over any other part of the url text is almost completely useless unless one is a speed reader. wallbash.gif

Here's a video to illustrate this behavior:

Sorry 'bout that, shows even in my iPad and I'm not 'logged in' to Photobucket on it. dntknw.gif Of course, I expected it to work on my own Mac. I will put it on Dropbox tomorrow or even some web space. All it really shows is that the only place to get the pop-up URL to remain visible is to stop the cursor on the one pixel tall and URL wide underline. Not exactly a big target and certainly not normal. The video is actually slightly less interesting than watching paint dry. YMMV! laughhard.gif

I had to use Google Chrome to view the video. FF has a flash blocker and I couldn’t override the settings for the new (and supposedly improved) photobucket. Didn't try Safari. Anyhow in Chrome I watched the vid and now I get what you are talking about. tongue.gif  I remember noticing the whole "sweet spot" back when I used Mail, and I found it seriously annoying. wink.gif I don't know if there is a solution to make the whole link work like the underline.

Amazing help! And so quick! Thank you, thank you! Whatever you did kimmer,  the links are now remaining open no matter where I put the cursor! I can even move it all over the link without it disappearing! I don't know what you did, or how you did it (although it is a little scary!) but thank you, again.

Of course, now that I've seen it work correctly, I fully expect your 'fix' to disappear and things return to ABnormal.

The video was saved as a QuickTime movie. However, Photobucket may alter the format after uploading it. When I viewed it in Chrome, it opened in a blank 'player' page. When I opened it on the iPad, it actually opened a page displaying all my other public images in a PB page with the video showing in a small part of that page. dntknw.gif It's the first vid I've uploaded and I rarely make any, so it's not much of a priority to figure out the problem.

I would suspect viewing from the computer I used to log in and upload anything, would cause PB to check for a Cookie. That may explain why I got a different presentation from the iPad. However, the iPad doesn't display or even use Flash, so I don't think that is relevant to the vid not showing everywhere.

The service is extremely easy to use, but one must perform things in a particular order. I have not paid for any upgrade, I think there is a daily/weekly/monthly usage maximum. Strangely, it has yet to show that I have used any storage space. wallbash.gif dntknw.gif
