Fishy generational changes!
« on: June 29, 2013, 04:29:32 PM »
We started out a few years ago with less expensive fish called Shubunkins. They can be bought for ~$2 each. Most of you have probably heard of Koi which are more like $20 each. Koi can grow huge (24 inches!), big enough to eat, if you like expensive fish! eek2.gif I figured I would stick with the cheaper models. laugh.gif

We started with seven, now have only six. But these pictures show three spawn that don't seem to have come from the originals! Their coloring is simply 'weird!' One albino and two blacks! One of the black ones does show a few colorful spots. The other "black" one is actually more very dark brown. The albino is not really white, either, but certainly lack the colors of its parents/cousins... assuming the parents were from my pond! Thinking.gif

We actually did have two 'shiners'/minnows that must have come from some of the dozen ponds/lakes within a few thousand feet of our house. Most transported by birds, but we do have leopard and bull frogs that can travel overland... Both those rather nondescript 'foreigners' died a few weeks ago.

This one is really more black but does have a few "Shubunkin" spots

I'd never heard of Shubunkins, but they are colorful and the price is right ... come on down! Oops, got carried away.

How does a bird transport a live minnow? Wouldn't the bird have eaten it? Same with the frogs? unsure.gif

Still, I like your collection and wish we could have a little pond; but it would be just like planting pansies and quickly become a food bar for the wildlife. laugh.gif

Transport is done with the eggs; they are usually sticky, for a while, anyway. Unfortunately, the bird is usually a water fowl... often a fish-eating type! Heron, egret, etc. I don't want to see them around MY pond! They should buy their own lunch! The minnow/shiners are not a fair trade for the Shubbies! rant.gif

You may not like them, but I do. They are all cool.

What is that quote ... "If wishes were fishes, the ocean would be full", or something like that.

Maybe you should so more wishing and fill up your pond.  toothgrin.gif

Woo, Jim, I'd be more worried about that pasty, lobed interloper on the left side of the middle photo. eek2.gif

That IS one of the biggest problems for this pond and its inhabitants! OTOH, that hand also can be quite helpful. I started to crop it out of the image but it helps give an idea of the size of the ichthyoid.

Some one asked about a 'party' on the Tech side. So, I'd like to invite every one over for a fried frog dinner! We have about 1,843 tadpoles in our pond! FREE! All you can eat! Don't forget to bring your own net (fine mesh, of course)! yum.gif

Not big on frog legs, but I'd love to see a picture. smile.gif

You are going to need an awful lot of those little tadpoles, to gather enough 'frog' legs' to have anything close to a party... And who will supply the magnifying glass to do the micro-miniature amputations???

Call when you have the details worked out...will supply own shoes.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him to
use the Net and he won't bother you for weeks.

The party was intended to occur before the legs appeared! So far, our grand-dog is doing a great job of removing any frogs big enough to have legs worthy of frying. rolleyes.gif Upsets her 'mom' no little bit! laughhard.gif But the dog is just doing her thing; "If it moves, it's fair game for a chase!" yum.gif
