I haven't seen that one, but if you want to check out the latest version, visit Adobe Flash Player download site. System Preferences/Flash Player/Advanced will tell you which one you currently have.

Are you still using Flash®?! If so, why? dntknw.gif

The reasons listed on that dialog certainly don't impress me. I don't use Facebook. I couldn't care less about how many 'connected PCs' have Flash® installed. In fact, that's one of the reasons it became so popular as a malware vector! And if I want to view something that absolutely requires Flash®, Chrome™ handles it just fine while running Flash in a sandboxed bit of memory! thumbup.gif

As for the dialog, it looks normal to me, but why trust any pop-up when you can always go directly to the developer's site for the real thing? wink.gif

The kids use Flash on these Macs, and my new slide shows use it. We do have connected PCs for their games and so forth.
So I guess I like it OK, but I hope that there isnt a problem with it, as Ive not had anything like you describe.
Its just one of those things that we do use and hope it doesnt hurt, like driving on the highway, we need it, but hope it doesnt crash.

"Hope" is not going to prevent problems. That's why you drive defensively (I hope! wink.gif )! Same with your computer, "hope" won't prevent you from getting it damaged by installing things you don't need.

If you choose to use Flash on your web site, that's your decision. That's not going to hurt you and probably not others. But Flash can and has been used to install malware. So, encouraging/requiring its use will only expose more people to its misuse. But you can use Chrome to run Flash and avoid its dangers. Whether you note that on your site is up to you.

Other than at a web site, I'm not sure how your "kids use Flash on these Macs." dntknw.gif "web sites," of course is what Chrome is used for. wink.gif

It's like deciding to drive a car that you know is safe as opposed to driving one that has no seat belts, bad brakes, no head/tail lights and worn out tires. Why would you do that and just "hope" it all works... this time. laughhard.gif

Kind of glib and not very helpful.

His Royal Steveness may have been correct that Flash can be problematic, but then so are other technologies.

<aghast!>However he was dead wrong</aghast!> about how quickly HTML5 would come to the fore.  Hence the iPad was crippled before it was even born (IMHO).....

If one likes to watch news from major international news organisations or sports from major sports leagues, then Flash, quirks and all, is a necessity!!!

Chrome® is the child of Google® and some people dislike Google® as much as others dislike Flash®.

Frankly it beggars the imagination to think that some day soon we will NOT  find out that Google® has been using Chrome® to mine even more personal data from an unsuspecting public than it can get from other browsers.

Are you trying to say my revulsion of Flash is showing?! laughhard.gif

I assure you Google ranks just behind Flash. Actually, it's a tie between Adobe and Google, I just change dead horses in mid-stream sometimes! deadhorse.gif

We all use Chrome. Looks like there are nasty things all over computerland, and all I can do is try to be careful. Not a problem so far thank goodness.

As I'm pretty sure I've said before, but perhaps it bears repeating, as a web designer, I'd never consider using Flash for ANYTHING, because it immediately locks out that content for all iPhone, iPad, Windows phone and with the latest Android release, those phones and tablets as well. (As of July, Android Jelly Bean is in use on about 30% of all Android devices) Considering the ever increasing user of handheld devices to access the web, it makes no sense at all to use a means to present content that is inaccessible to so many. Adobe has been very clear; they've abandoned Flash development for mobile devices to concentrate on Flash for game development and for encrypted video.

Given that Flash has become a vector for delivering malware, if you do have it installed on your computer, you should endeavour to keep it up to date, as many of those annoyingly frequent updates are security updates released to plug yet another hole.

All well and good, and all new content should be created in something other than Flash, but there is a hell of a lot of content 'in the wild' that requires Flash.  Notably new and sports and if that kind of material is important to you then you need to be able to, and comfortable with, updating Flash as required.

Which is why most OSX updates are released, is it not?  Security is everyone's issue - not just re Flash.

I think the "we" in Mrs Carter's post means all her family. wink.gif

The main problem is that the background tasks that Adobe uses to monitor the need for an update. Since is not a separate app, when you see/get this update window, it's not obvious that it is coming from the developer. Although there are no know virus' that would cause this kind of window, some people are leery of accepting any request to update or do most any kind of access to some site simply because a window pops up telling you to do that. Windows/text/graphics are all extremely easy to copy/steal/duplicate/'borrow' fro their original location, so any developer's 'unique' window could be presented by a hacker.

Apple, of course, uses Software Update to notify updates for all its apps and those bought through the App Store. Most third-party apps have a pref setting for notifying about updates while running that app. Adobe's Flash has no GUI and so one will get these Update windows for no apparent reason. I think that's all that caused Jane her concerns. There is no convenient way to confirm these are valid update requests. That's why I suggested that she simply go to Adobe's site for the download.

If she is using Chrome, this would/should be happening via Chrome Updates. They just may be a little later than Adobe's. And, since she is using Chrome, there's no real need to still have Flash code on her drive(s). That will eliminate these unexpected update requests from Adobe. wink.gif

Well explained!  I was a bit leery of that pop-up,, but did download from the site itself, after checking.
Yes, my family, there are so many kinds of computers and devices, and they all use Flash except the iPHones.
My grandson's iPad is broken, the Home button gave up the ghost, so I have to send it back, but he cant find the box.
Chrome, I do like it and seems we all use it most of the time.

Im learning,,,,,as I always do here,,,,,,
Very OT, but I just have to include this picture,,,,she is tired from swimming,
