Is there a way on these forums to block the display of smilies or emoticons or whatever you call them?

Gratuitous use of these things does not enhance meaning and makes some messages hard to read besides using unnecessary bandwidth.

I wondered if there was a way for a viewer to shut it off.

Yes, you can turn them off, if you wish. Go into My Contols (top left, just below TS banner) and from the left side menu, click on Options ->Board Settings. Of course, if you turn them off, you may find that you'll miss the meaning/intent at times...

Don't know if the skins put controls in different places, Paddy, but I'm using TS Default and it's to the right of the middle below the word "sorts" in the banner.

(Resists temptation to add smilie....)

I'll have to be more careful not to be humorous if I can't use smileys; it might be confusing!  Maybe as a test I'll try "very hard" not to be humorous for a day, then a week, then a month; please let me know if I slip up!

Thanks, Paddy but that doesn't do what I want.  It lumps emoticon/smilies in with uploaded images which can be interesting and useful.

It is the bloody useless infantile smilies I want to get rid off.  They add nothing to a message IMHO, indeed often obscure the meaning, make it harder to read and use bandwidth.

Another question while I am at it - - how does one upload an image to the forum.  I've read Xairbusdriver's tutorial but when I hi reply there is no attachment command available.

The OTHER left, Neil, the other left! LOL. A dyslexic moment. I'm no good at turn by turn driving directions either. I don't foresee a future as a GPS. wink.gif

To upload a pic to produce a thumbnail like the one in my post, you need to make sure it's not too big a pic (the board software and the server space won't allow it to be too big, but I can't remember the figures).

Below the reply window you should find a "Browse" button, with a green "Upload" button to its right. Use the browser button to find the illustration on your computer, then press Upload. It does not show in Preview - it becomes visible in the post only after you've submitted it.

Oh, that one Paddy - yes I've had the occasional interesting moment when SWMBO was navigating (I nearly typed naggivating....).

Sorry - yes, you're correct, rgray. Emoticons AND images are enabled or disabled from the same control and you cannot have one without the other. It's not something the board software allows. We'd have to create another skin pointing to an empty smiley folder, I think...and that's only a theory, as I've not tried it (and don't actually have time to try it at the moment, as I need to finish a couple of websites in the next couple of days and then go away for a week where any access to the net is via my cell phone only).

In general, it's good netiquette to limit your use of smilies. I'd say one or two per post is generally more than enough - it's usually all I will use, if any.

This is due to our older board software. We're working on upgrading, but no timetable has been set; so you'll see little glitches like this now and then. Apologies to one and all for this. Bear with us. :=)

Another alternative is to use the Lo-Fi  version of TS.  This is accessible via a link you will find at the very bottom of the page.  It is bare bones and will remove avatars, smilies and other graphic embellishments.  Image attachments in posts are still viewable via a link in the post so you won't miss out on important information.

Overuse of smilies can be annoying but they do help qualify the sentiment in some posts. We've had misunderstandings that could have been prevented with judicious use of emoticons. Nothing's perfect.  (would normally put smilie here...)

I think there is a limit of 10 smilies in a single post. That's why I have to break some of mine into multiple entries... wallbash.gif  Groaner.gif

BTW, none of the smilies nor the simple, single styling was done in the Fast Reply message box, since none of the icon work... Fortunately, depending on your preferences, I know may of the smilie 'codes' by heart and have macros for several of the longer 'keywords'. rolleyes.gif

A good rule of thumb.

Not a problem beyond me taking a little time to get used to the dynamics.

I am unwilling to give up most graphical elements.  It is the gratuitous use of smilies to which I object!

There is another way to solve the problem and that is to put the more egregious offenders on my "ignore" list.  I have never felt the need to do that before!

A single smilie might be appropriate there and I can see if used sparingly and with reserve it is possible that they could clarify meaning.

But that is not the kind of use to which I refer.  Gratuitous use clouds meaning and annoys.

And an example presents itself!!!!  Voila Exhibit A.

Please explain how the smilies here enhance the meaning?????????  Four smilies for less that four full lines of text????

BTW, yes I believe 10 images is in the rules of the software some where.....

I'm not sure if that "seven more to go" is some kind of threat or what.........  Quite apart from the fact that there are four smilies here and  I make 10 minus 4 to be six......     whistling.gif

It would take four more before one gets the software-generated warning that the limit had been exceeded and that one should refrain from using redundant and irrelevant graphics when mere words would suffice to tell the story notwithstanding that a picture is worth a thousand words.

Now, if we're going to list annoyances; when will people learn the differences among "there," "their," and "they're?!" rant.gif

As far as I can see, Jim, nobody has misused any of  those words in this thread.

Anyway, discussions on semantics and grammar should go in Community so you're  offtopic.gif wink.gif
