How sad are your neighborhoods tweets?
« on: August 22, 2013, 08:38:34 AM »
I do the same commute 5 days a week and the highway parts are generally okay but in Larryville and in Topeka things are a little frustrating at times and if I were a tweeter I'm sure I'd post some unhappy comments.  The New England Complex Systems Institute studied the content of a great number of tweets in New York City and categorized their content and mapped onto the areas which are happier and which are unhappier.

This is where I originally saw this:

And this is where the original abstract is:

I don't know how many Big Apple residents we have here at TS but the idea is universal!

I got to thinking that all the teenagers I've ever know would probably have unhappy tweets at least two thirds of the time!  whistling.gif  Maybe it would make the area around them happier if you terminated their cell phone service!

I don't tweet and don't see the point of it at all. I was a happy teenager, and I'm a happy adult.

According to NPR and the University of Michigan Facebook also contributes to unhappiness:

QUOTE
A new study on college-aged adults finds that the more they used Facebook, the worse they felt. The study, published in the journal PLOS One, found Facebook use led to declines in moment-to-moment happiness and overall life satisfaction.

"There's a huge amount of interest ... because Facebook is so widespread," says research co-author , a University of Michigan cognitive neuroscientist. "With something like half a billion people who use Facebook every day, understanding the consequences of that use on our well being is of critical importance."

I do use Facebook, mainly to keep up with cousins and such who live far away, but I do note a dissatisfaction sometimes and I think it's that I'm not there in reality!  It isn't a very good second choice!

Part of this phenomenon may simply be the tendency to complain more than compliment. I have one HS bud that simply loves to complain about any and everything in politics. Fortunately, he has dozens of Grandkids and we get a glimpse of his humor and compassion. wink.gif Although mentioning his progeny sometimes turns to anger, fear and concern about what they will be faced with... rolleyes.gif
