Anyone ever tried to delete Twitter from OS 10.8?
« on: August 29, 2013, 07:32:33 PM »
I have absolutely no use for Twitter and cannot figure out how to make it GO AWAY for good. It's constantly showing up in the AppStore updates, even when I've deleted every last crumb of it and it's driving me mad. Have Apple so thoroughly integrated this nuisance app with the OS that we can no longer get rid of it??

I've looked for everything related to it using FindAnyFile, I've deleted .plist files for both it and the App Store and no matter what I do, it's STILL reminding it needs an update, unless of course, I choose to update it and then there it is again in my applications folder. And then I try deleting it again and back it appears in the App Store wanting to be updated and round and round we go.

It's become so annoying that it's now more the principle of the thing rather than the app itself. mad.gif

Wow. You scared me. I don't twit and I've never seen anything about updating this. I searched my iMac and I don't have it installed, and I'm running OS 10.8.4 (12E55). So I can't help you uninstall it, but I'll be watching here so I can learn in case this manages to install itself. Now that would make me mad.gif .

BTW, thanks for the tip on FindAnyFile.

I have a "com.apple.appstore.plist" in my user Library. It's pretty much empty since I don't have any outstanding updates available. But there is a place for an array (of apps, I suspect) just under the key called "availableUpdate" that probably gets updated by some daemon that runs every few minutes to see if there are any new updates at the MAS.

If you look at that plist (I use BBEdit, but it may be possible with nothing more than TextEdit), you may see an entry for 'Twitter'. Deleting that one entry (for Twitter) should turn off the update message, but probably only until the daemon calls home again.

Somewhere else must be a list apps you've bought. I hope it's not on Apple's servers.

I use another app (Growl) that the developers originally offered via their own site but then started using the App Store. People are almost daily asking how to turn off the App Store request to update when they have already downloaded/installed the latest version. The 'solution' is to use a little app that will find parts of the original app that the user has failed to delete (or didn't even know they had!). So, even though you used something other than Finder, I suspect there are dregs of the original somewhere on your drive.

Do you see anything in Activity Monitor that might give a clue as to a process that might be connected to Twitter?

I'd recommend using a search tool that does NOT use Spotlight records/info. But that may not help if the file/app doesn't have something obviously identifiable as something belonging to "Twitter." I assume you have also Googled about this situation? Thinking.gif

OK, see if you find anything about Twitter in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/PICK_any_FILE/Manifest.plist. Sorting by date may help. I found one dated 8/21/2013 but I didn't look further. It appears to be a list of every app I've ever downloaded from the MAS (including iOS stuff). It may be what the Store or the daemon uses to decide there is an update available. Of course, I don't know exactly how or when it is created, but if it has something about Twitter in it, it may be at least part of the problem.

Good luck!

This post will self destruct in 15 seconds.

More hints here. A '_MASreceipt' file that may not be valid. Next to last post in <this thread>. Apparently, FindAnyFile is able to find that, also.

The above post mentions a thread on the Apple Forums, perhaps <how to delete purchased Appstore history?> it has 13 pages! I'll leave the search for an exercise for the student... with a few days free of all other activities!!! eek2.gif

_MASreceipt is in the Twitter.app file, so gets deleted when you delete the app. So no joy there. (Unless I just delete it and leave the app, I suppose)

The 13 page thread is about iPhones. I've tried hiding Twitter - now it's actually GONE from my "purchases" list and now not in the hidden list either BUT IT STILL #*&^% wants me to "update" it!!! I've done everything I can think of and tried every suggestion on every thread I've found on Google. I've come to the conclusion that short of reinstalling everything from scratch on a clean install (simply not going to happen - not with 242 applications) I may be stuck with this freaking nuisance application.

The "Just works" philosophy can sometimes make it extremely frustrating and difficult when it doesn't! wallbash.gif

OK, just to be sure we are looking at the same solution(s)...
This is the one that I mentioned:
QUOTE
1) Follow the hints here: <https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4301699?start=15&tstart=0>

2) If that fails (e.g. if there is no evidence anywhere on your system of the offending app), you have pirated software on your system (whether you installed it or not - no accusation intended) in which someone put their own Apple Store "receipt" file from a valid app into one they didn't pay for to trick the system into thinking it was paid for. The way to track this down:

2a) Launch the Terminal.
2b) Type: "locate _MASReceipt/" (without the quotation marks) and press Return (Enter).
2c) That gives you a list of installed apps that came from, or have been faked to appear to have come from, the Apple Store. Compare this list to the list in the Apple Store application under Purchases.
2d) Make a short list of those which appear in the "locate" list but not the real App Store list; in the App Store application, select Store -> Sign In, login with that, then pick Store -> View My Account, then (after App Store makes you login again for no reason) select View Hidden Purchases, and eliminate any apps that appear here from your short list of suspect apps.
2e) If your suspects list is just one app, trash that and reboot.
2f) Otherwise open (in a text editor) the receipt file in the _MASReceipt folder inside the application bundle (e.g. /Applications/FooBarBazQuux.app/Contents/_MASReceipt/receipt) of each suspect app in turn, and look for text strings, such as an app name, publisher name, user ID, or other telltale content that has something to do with the app you can't update or get rid of and nothing to do with the app in which you found that receipt file. When you find the culprit app, trash it and reboot.
The main problem is that YOU HAVE TOO MANY APPS! tease.gif That may cause difficulties in following step 2c & d. I just copied the text in Terminal and pasted it into TextEdit. Then I opened the App Store and compared it to that list. I'm going to follow the link above to look at that post in detail, hopefully there will be comments nearby, also.

The key here is to find what does NOT match in the two lists. Apparently, a hacked/pirated app can 'borrow' the _MASReceipt folder and fools Apple's servers into thinking it is an approved app, namely Twitter, in this case.

But the post following the above 'solution' has a different method. Unfortunately, I think it would still require finding the suspect app and it also involves a different Apple ID problem.
QUOTE
I had the problem of App Store Twitter Update from an unknown apple ID. This is how I fixed the issue, hope works for others as well:

1- Start MAC Apple Store.
2- From Menu Bar Select Store then View My Account.
3- In the Account Panel, click "RESET" Reset all warnings for buying and downloading.
4- Click DONE to exit.
5- In the Apple Store search box, type and search for Twitter
6- Select "Twitter" only from the given options and click to install it. A fresh app will dive into your Launch Pad and starts downloading with your own apple ID.
7- The Red Update No. will be removed from App Store icon on Dock.
8- Once app is downloaded and installed, you may uninstall it (like other apps) if you don't wish to keep it.
I've never used this procedure and I don't know what "The red Update No" actually refers to. dntknw.gif

If you're ever down near the server farm you might try unplugging the power into the building. They probably never do a cold restart on those computers... Thinking.gif

No help, that link is just the origin of the instructions about the _MASReceipt folder.

However, one poster mentioned that he found an email attachment (not sure if it was an installer or an actual app) for which he was getting a constant "update" request. Might be wise to double-check/search those files in Mail/etc. I think you'll find your Mail attachments with this path: ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library. If you ever open the message with that attachment, you'll probably get a warning or at least a broken link icon indicating the attachment is missing.

If searching in Mail indicates a message that may mention Twitter, it might be good to use Message->Remove Attachments with that message selected. Then also delete the message, if you like.

Found the offending app - something I'd downloaded ages ago when it was all the rage and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, but wasn't about to pay for it, since I figured I'd never really use it (figured right). Oops. So - bye bye to that and end of problem! Thanks, Jim. I HAD read the thread, but couldn't think how it applied to me, as I'd completely forgotten about the er...somewhat non-legit...app.

Angry Birds. Remember all the fuss about it? Well, I didn't have an iPhone or iPad at the time and when they released the desktop version, I was curious. But not curious enough to pay $5 for it, and there was a lot of info about *ahem* "free" version around, so I downloaded that to have a look. Think I tried it once, but I don't play games on my computer typically other than the odd game of solitaire, so it never got used and I forgot about it. Out of 274 installed apps on my computer, it was the only non-legit one. It's now gone, needless to say. tongue.gif

I do have the free iPad version of it and have played it a few times, but don't find it anywhere near as addictive as Whirly Word. Now THAT is one addictive game!!! biggrin.gif

Thank you for the info Paddy.

I, like you, don't play many games on my iMac, and then, usually Solitaire.

Aren't you supposed to win an occasional game.

I don't think I have won one yet! (Solitaire Free)

Just read an article at ars about a much more powerful password cracker and it also mentioned some of the most dangerous search words! Either number one or two was "free!" Apparently, it's too often used to lure people to download something/anything which also downloads malware/hacked apps/etc. So even if the user is asked for their admin password, they assume it's a valid request to install the "free" app. Fortunately, we still don't have many apps like that for Apple's app stores, but it has happened. That's apparently what happened with the "Angry Birds" app you got. Either intentionally or not, it created that _MASReipts folder and the System uses those to identify apps that have updates. At least that's what I understand from the various posts.

It's a rare situation but one that I may remember if I see this behavior! rolleyes.gif I'll probably just post on TS and you can say something about my failing memory!! blush-anim-cl.gif laughhard.gif

OTOH, I still say you need to prune/chop down/slash and burn a few dozen apps!!! tease.gif
