Topic title says it all.  Am looking at the 11" MBAs.  Been trying to use an external keyboard with my iPad but it is a bit of a chore to balance the two when I'm not at a desk. Soooo, I'm thinking of treating myself this Christmas.  santagrin.gif toothgrin.gif

My sweet wife insisted I get myself a new computer for Christmas.

Went to the Apple store last Monday and picked up a 27-inch iMac. Now it's Wednesday evening and I'm about to get it configured the way I want it.

I'm going to love it (almost as much as I love her)!

Happy Holidays to all, and Merry Christmas to those who observe such.

Joe

Thanks Bob, that helped me decide. smile.gif

Paddy, I changed a few but the store was pretty busy and most of the Macs were being used. That's a good thing. yes.gif

Joe, ooh, nice.  Let us know how it goes.

It is now Friday late...Santa came early and my new MBA is sitting on the table waiting for me to remove the plastic cover. I wanted it to acclimate itself after being out in the 20º weather all day on the UPS truck. But it's late now and I'm going to bed and dream of my new toy that will be waiting for me in the AM...or PM, depending on when I get up.  toothgrin.gif

We're supposed to get several inches of the white stuff Saturday so I guess I'll be forced to stay inside....rolleyes.gif

Since it's a refurb, it did not come with Mavericks installed. I took care of that in short order.

Migration Assistant handled everything very smoothly from my SuperDuper backup drive.

Only a few apps needed upgrades for the new OS.

I did not get along very well with the Bluetooth keyboard and Magic Mouse, so I'm using the old USB keyboard and mouse I used with my MBP.

My wireless Internet works fine after I got it configured properly.

And I did it all by myself!

Congrats, Joe on setting up the new iMac. clap.gif

I'm holding off on Mavericks for now. The Air came with ML installed with info on upgrading and getting the new iWorks apps (don't really want them).  I've been reading a lot about Mavericks cutting the battery life on Airs, despite the claim that it has better management, so I will wait to see if there is an update first. I'm a little leery of this battery as it was on the charger for 4 hours and only registered 90%. It seems to only charge when being actively used and not during sleep or off. I may give it an SMC reset later to see if that will help. Now it's at 93% and says 13 hours runtime on battery but of course that is because I don't have any active apps running. smile.gif

Otherwise I haven't set up Mail, etc. yet, just general prefs. Will be installing a few apps later but will be keeping the crud to a minimum on this machine. It's for non extensive usage so want it to be free of baggage.

Will be back with more as I get it going...

Update:  Things going nicely with the new Air.  It took a long time but it finally charged fully and has held it well. Guess it was tired from its long trip from the Long Island warehouse to NJ.  rolleyes.gif

I did have some trouble with the Wifi at my house. I spent hours trying to get it to stay connected but it would drop every few seconds. I read through a lot of the threads at the Apple forum (one is 128 pages long) about the problems some people have with the Airs and Wifi.  Tried all the suggestions but nothing worked. I was afraid I was going to have to return it but I waited til I got to my Dad's house where we have the latest Airport Extreme (6th gen). Was quite relieved to have it pop right on and stay solid with excellent download speed. It found the three printers on the Extreme network and set them up in minutes. So easy, no software to install, just type in the password for the network and TA-DA.  Have to put the blame on my old router at my house, just too old to keep up with the new stuff. I remember I had trouble with the iPad at first with my router but it worked fine at Dad's. Lesson learned.

Presently moving a few apps to the Air but will not fill it up with a lot of trash since it will be used for things that won't require access to a lot of data. Am very impressed with the speed. Login to the desktop is almost instantaneous. I was worried about it being too small for my eyes but I just set minimum font sizes in browsers and for labels and things are not to difficult to see (with my reading glasses of course).

Only negative at this point is I will have to pay for the updates to some programs I use. Been running Snow Leopard mostly and some apps won't run on ML without a paid update. Boo.
Oh, also have to do some thinking when connecting to older externals. Got a thunderbolt to FW adapter and a couple 800 to 400 plugs so all my older drives will be usable. Also got one of the Apple external Superdrives so I wouldn't have to go through the sharing dance. smile.gif

All in all, pretty pleased with the Air. It's so light, yet solid. Think I will be using it more than I first anticipated. Thinking.gif
