My desktop "blinked" at me?????
« on: December 14, 2013, 02:12:51 AM »
Hi, Everyone, and Happy Weekend!

I was online, typing out an email to a friend, when all of a sudden, my monitor lost all of it's folders and icons that I have on it--but the background picture was fine.  Everything but the open email window and the desktop pic disappeared!

Then, voila!, everything came back after a few seconds, but they were on the right side of the screen, except for my external HD backup, which stayed in place over at the top left side.

What happened???  Thanks for any info!

I have a 10 yr old iMac, running OS 10.6.8.

Smiles,
Sooz

Sounds like the Finder re-launched itself. Did you hit any odd combination of keys by accident? For example, if you were in Finder and pressed Command-Q, it would quit and relaunch when you clicked the Finder icon again.

HMMMMM  not a good sign. Were it me, the first order of business would be to be sure that you have a current back-up of the hd.  JUST IN CASE.

Thanks for the input!  I know I didn't do a Command-Q thingy, but I could have hit some other keys by accident.  Yuppers, I do have a current backup of the HD on my external HD, plus I have extra backup on some pin drives.

The mystery remains, I guess.  whistling.gif

Happy Saturday!

Hi Sooz,

I concur with Jon. Sounds like the Finder relaunched by itself. I've had that happen a few times for no apparent reason over the years. Often some background process has a hiccup and needs to reset things. Biggest problem is that if you had some other program open it might lose any data you were working on and not able to save. But if you are backed up fully as Daryl reminds us, I wouldn't worry about it.
