Reinstall MS Office 2004 on Power Mac G5 Quad
« on: December 16, 2013, 02:19:37 PM »
Hi,

My copy of Entourage 2004 suddenly started to delete e-mails after receiving them.

How can I restore MS Office 2004 from the original install 2 disks without reinstalling the whole package?

The OS was originally Tiger, meantime upgraded to Panther.

Thanks for any help.

Before you do anything drastic, see if you can repair Entourage's database. In Entourage 2008, you do this by quitting all Office apps and launching Entourage while pressing Option. Then, follow the prompts. If that doesn't work, consult Entourage Help for instructions.

Thanks jchuzi. Tried your suggestion. Sadly it did not resolve my problem.
Can you or somebody else provide further suggestions?

Before I make a suggestion, you said that you upgraded from Tiger to Panther. This has to be a typo; Tiger is 10.4 and Panther is 10.3.

Now to the suggestion:  You may be able to extract Entourage from the Office 2004 disk with Pacifist. I can't promise that it will work but you could look into it.

Before you do that, however, see if a corrupt preference file is to blame. Quite all Office apps. Move ~/Library/preferences/com.microsoft.Entourage.plist to the desktop and launch Entourage. If this works, you'll have to reset your Entourage preferences. If it doesn't work, quite Entourage and move the old plist back.

An easier possibility is to trash ~/Library/Caches/com.microsoft.Entourage and relaunch Entourage. In fact, I would try this first.

jchuzi,

Now in my mid-eighties, I'm beginning to wonder whether my mind is wandering. See (3) later.

Tried your latest attempts to help me, thank you.

1. I discovered that ~/Library/Caches/com.microsoft.Entourage does not exist on my Quad.

2. Moving ~/Library/preferences/com.microsoft.Entourage.plist to the desktop failed to cure the problem.

3. I discovered after reinstalling bundled software that MS Office was NOT included on my Quad's original disks. Sorry for misleading those who took the trouble to read my query.

BUT after the reinstallation of Garage Band, etc, there appeared, new, and out of nowhere,
Pages and Keynote, both fully functional!

I suppose that I must have installed MS Office from a disk, way back when. A renewed search through my stuff seems to be indicated.

Thanks again for your help.

BTW. Luckily I have an old MacBook on which Entourage functions satisfactorily.
