Blu-ray Multiple Formats

Can anyone 'splain "Format: Multiple Formats, Blu-ray,"? In researching blu-ray multiple formats, I found links to blu-ray players that say "Multiple Format Capability". We want to replace our blu-ray player and are wondering if this is something to take into account. We'd like a player that handles dvds as well as blu-ray, does CC on both, and the remote absolutely MUST have a CC button on it (our Panasonic does not). Anyhow, what the heck is multiple formats?

You mean there's not a Wiki page on that?! I'm surprised it didn't pop up near the top of a search for 'blu-ray formats'!

Good luck! We don't eve  have a DVD player besides our Macs. We got tired of having to rewind the ones we'd rent after the previous renter was a lazy slob!!! rant.gif

First hit: <blu-ray.com> However, I suspect that what your really want to know is not the "format" but the "codecs" supported. This page lists "formats" as Ready-Only, Recordable and Re-Writable; basically the same as for CDs and DVDs.

If it's "codecs" you're interested in, see item 1.9 on that page:
    Linear PCM (LPCM) - up to 8 channels of uncompressed audio. (mandatory)
    Dolby Digital (DD) - format used for DVDs, 5.1-channel surround sound. (mandatory)
    Dolby Digital Plus (DD+) - extension of Dolby Digital, 7.1-channel surround sound. (optional)
    Dolby TrueHD - lossless encoding of up to 8 channels of audio. (optional)
    DTS Digital Surround - format used for DVDs, 5.1-channel surround sound. (mandatory)
    DTS-HD High Resolution Audio - extension of DTS, 7.1-channel surround sound. (optional)
    DTS-HD Master Audio - lossless encoding of up to 8 channels of audio. (optional)

Please note that this simply means that Blu-ray players and recorders will have to support playback of these audio codecs, it will still be up to the movie studios to decide which audio codec(s) they use for their releases.
