new Comcast modem questions
« on: August 04, 2014, 01:33:19 PM »
Comcast sent me a new Modem, which I dont need, but they sent it anyway.
Got a built in router which I dont need either.

But the question that I want answered, is there is a big Yellow Warning thing on the power cord saying never to disconnect the cord from the AC source.
The tech said it would ***destroy*** the modem if I did.
What if the power goes out?
And the old way to reboot the modems was to unplug the thing, wait, then plug it back into the AC.

also mentioned in a forum about Arris modems, that they do not work well with external routers and to switch and use a Motorola modem, which my old one is.
I just might take this one back to our local Comcast office, I really dont need it.

Its also a phone modem, which I told them I dont want.
Arris model #TG862G/CT and oh my goodness I have found so much on the web about these modems and I dont want it, so it goes back to the Comcast office next time I hit the grocery

I got thru to Arris tech support phone, in USA and the guy was very nice, and we discussed the problems that people are having with this particular phone modem. He said if my Motorola modem is working, then keep it, return the Arris to Comcast. If it aint broke,,,,,,,

And the reason about the AC power cord yellow warning stickers, is not that disconnecting it would destroy it, like the Comcast guy said, it would just disconnect the phone if you were using Comcast internet phone, which I do not.

So I certainly dont need this combo modem, he and I had a good laugh.

Before you return that modem, compare its specs to the one you now have. You want the highest DOCSIS version you can get.Not sure what kind of modem Comcast is using up there but mine is also a "phone' modem. We don't use any VOIP system and it was easy to re-connect the phone lines the tech changed even after I told him we were not going to use it that way. wallbash.gif But my point is, this modem also has at least four D batteries in it. Pulling the plug would not disconnect the phone system until the batteries died, anyway. OTOH, I really don't know since we never used it that way. rolleyes.gif Pulling the plug still works as a means of disconnecting the Internet connection, however.

I hardly ever bother calling a Comcast tech for anything. The only thing I would trust them to tell me is that I can upgrade... no matter what plan I might have. All they know is what they read on the monitor... and I suspect that some of them are still learning that skill.

I just cannot believe how little the Comcast reps know, except for one who I can email who works Sunday mornings only. She calls me back on her line.
She is excellent, and Sunday morning is best for me too, as I have some free time in my computer room.

I know that they said that the move from DOCSIS 2 to 3 would make my stuff much faster, but its so fast now that I really cant want more.
I upload pix to my sites and they go like lightning, and I dont get jerky stuff watching video.

Im happy with my Motorola for the time being.
The reason I called them was to get the Tennis Channel for my grandson, and get rid of some of the total crap that we never watch, so they gave us the sports whatever package, and deleted some of the crap and brought us down about $10 a month.

Brian Roberts has his summer house on Martha's Vineyard about 2 miles from relatives of ours, so I should go over and let him know that I LOVE the Comcast internet, I HATE the Comcast TV lineup, though the picture and resolution is really lovely, and have no use for their VOIP stuff.
Its all about selling stuff and making more dough, and his house is rather impressive,,,,,,,

Oh! You misunderstood me. The speed is not for you, after all, we're talking about Comcast here! No, the speed is for them! It allows you to download/use up your data allotment faster than ever! Use it up? No problem. They'll simply add a few bucks to your next bill. "Go ahead! Enjoy our new, faster speeds... Please!" wallbash.gif

We always want/need more speed, more disk space, more and bigger monitors, more resolution... Saying you can't want more (of anything computer-wise) will get you blocked in some forums! That's Treasonous speech, I say!!! rant.gif eek2.gif scram.gif

I sure agree,,,,,
Hey, Comcast, thats what you want, but not me, Im happy with what Ive got.

My truck is 18 years old and is just exactly what I want, the heck with getting more than my 17 mpg.
I dont WANT a new truck! And if we need a slick car for a wedding or special event, we just rent one for the week.

That the way I feel too,,,,,,I shall keep my Motorola and my GMC and my husband's big old Ford truck.
And read consumers reports,,,,,to evaluate all the Chinese 'junk' on the market.

I have the same Comcast modem. It has the same sticker. Yet when I call Comcast for technical support, the very first thing they tell me to do is disconnect the power. It does not destroy the modem (that's totally silly; if it did, how could they test it at the factory and then ship it to you?)

The label is there, as folks have already said, because if you use it to relay phone calls you'll interrupt your call if you unplug it.

I have a wireless extender and a wired Ethernet hub attached to my modem. The extender is so I can get wifi in the loft; the Ethernet hub is to connect my work machines. The modem works just fine with both, no problems at all.
A whole lot about me: www.xeromag.com/franklin.html

I am going to wait, as what Ive got with the Motorola modem works just fine. I think its about 2 years old.
My grandson wants everything new and shiny, but  I am not ready for separate phone stuff and a built in wifi thing.

The Comcast reps really dont know much, thats why I called the Arris people.
And my wireless takes care of my extended family when they are all here, and Im not interested in the Comcast phone stuff, as friends and relatives say its not great.

But  I will keep this in mind, as one of our daughters is looking for a new system, and Comcast seems to be the way to go.
The more I see, the more I learn, but perhaps not from Comcast reps, 'destroy the modem' not gonna happen.

Sounds like you are planning on 'giving' the Comcast modem to some one. Be aware that you are the registered 'owner'. You are actually paying a monthly rental fee on that modem, whether you use it or not. When it comes time to return all your Comcast equipment, you'll be charged (no doubt a ridiculous amount) for whatever you can't produce/return.

No, I realize that if I dont take it down to our local Comcast office, that they will start charging me for 2 modems.
Our grandson already has 2 in their house, one for the security system and the other for the TV and computers.

The stuff I give away, like my older 27 inch Mac, is my personal stuff, which has been purchased. That one I gave to my grandson, and the older Mac tower, I gave to the other grandkids.
Then all the other stuff, my friend who works at the local high school, comes and takes a look at the equipment, books, and other stuff. Then some of it she takes to the high school and the other stuff goes to the village K thru 4th grade school. My PC, I never used it, so it went to a student at the high school who couldnt afford one, forgot his name.

Then the other stuff like outgrown bikes and stuff like that goes on the local FreeCycle site.

Actually I have a bunch of books to go to the book dept in our local thrift shop tomorrow morning.
I even give away my largest bamboo, people use it for grape arbors and trellisses and neighbour kids make forts of it. Its grown off into the woods for hundreds of yards, want some?

No thanks! That stuff is more tenacious than SPAM!! eek2.gif However, I've read that the Kudzu brought to the South to help stop erosion back in the 30's is 'learning' to grow in more cool environs and, like the killer bees, is slowly moving northward! eek2.gif On the bright side, Kudzu is probably the only thing that can stop the spread of bamboo! :wacky:

I actually love Bamboo, as growing up in S. Florida, we played with it as kids, and used it for almost everything from fishing poles to elaborate scaffoldings that my brothers and I made along with our friends.

We keep it out of our lawn and gardens by cutting it with the lawnmower when it comes up, or cutting the stalks from the garden.
The roots are a problem, so my husband has to cut them deeply with a bib blade thing, so they dont come up under our asphalt driveway or near the house or sheds.
But when it goes off into the woods, its so pretty in winter with its feathery greenery.

Wow, we never got that good, as we always had to have a big tree or something to build against.
But our stuff was pretty impressive, no pictures back then sadly.

Last year our neighbour's grandkids built a great fort with the bamboo that we cut for them.
They took it down for the winter, and they know I will supply them with bigger and thicker ones for this year.

Our grandsons can shoot their AirSoft guns in the thick grove, as nobody can hear them nor can any of the pellets get out of our yard and nobody can complain.

Perhaps I should take some pictures,,,,,
Here are a few pictures that I took of our grove one spring when the rainfall was very little,,,,
Oh, I cant put it on here, as Google picks links and stuff up off of this forum, will have to email it individually to whoever wants to see it.
