Pages to page?

Hello, TS!

I always hesitate to write when it has been so long -- but I have a question that I know someone there can answer.

I've been using Pages for my husband's latest text -- because he dictates it right into his iPad. But when I want to make a correction, say 50 pages back, I can't find a link or button that allows me to "go to" a certain page, as you can in the "find" function in Word. Is there a way to do that in Pages? Is there a "go to" function?

What items do you have in the Pages->Edit->Find menu?

Do you use "Sections" in his documents?
Chapter titles? Chapter numbers?
Page numbers?
Thumbnail View?

I've only created a couple of long documents, probably the longest is 164 'pages' (it's 'booklet' size not 8.5 x 11!) so I've not had much need for searching but I just use the Find (command-F) and if there are multiple hits, one can select them from the side-bar or use the other standard Find commands (command-G or command-shift-G). If you use "Sections" you can also search for those.

If you have a Table of Contents, you can also click on the page number to go to that chapters first page. Of course, you can create all kinds of hyper-links just about anywhere you might want to "go to".

Not sure why you're looking for a button, if all the menu items used buttons you'd end up with that cluttered mess called Word!

Hi Lorraine! Long time no see/hear - I hope things are going well for you!

What you want is View->Page Thumbnails (it's right at the top of the menu) - once that's visible, navigation is much easier. I opened the last book in Pages instead of Word to find out what a long doc looks like. It shows the facing pages too, which is nice.

dboh -- I cannot see any window that indicates "page" at the bottom -- I have the page number inserted in the footer, but that doesn't change to anything when I click on it. Can you post a picture of what you are referring to?

Are you using Pages on a desktop or iPad?

On the desktop, use View->Show Page Thumbnails.

OK, the elephant in the room is the new version of Pages which version of Pages Lorraine is using. The new (crippled) version may or (more likely) may not have the same controls/details as the better but earlier one.

Assuming she is using the "'09" version, here are some images to show exactly where this tool is located (the extreme bottom of the document window). It has nothing to do with Thumbnails except that the page numbers will be the same as those on the thumbnails. The problem is that thumbnails can display only a window-height limited list. The page you want may be well beyond that list in either direction. While there is this "go to page" capability, it is of limited value if you don't already know the specific page. That's why the "Find" command is still the most useful tool, in my humble opinion. You might want to view the link I offered in post #5, especially the Index which may help you find other answers.

Here's a shot of the "Go to Page" location on a Pages window.

Click once on the area shown above and it will change, as dboh said to the following:

You can now enter a number. It will replace whatever is there since that number is already highlighted for you.

It has it's own scroll bar, Jim. Easy to zip through it, without changing the page you're on until you find the one you want to go to. I've got a 267 page document open in Pages '09 at the moment - another book by Lorraine's husband which I helped her format.

So...Lorraine - are you using Pages '09 (the NON-crippled version) or the new "improved" (not) Pages 5?

Pages '09 is as Jim shows. Pages 5 does NOT have the page number box at the bottom of the page - so there is nothing to click on to go to a different page. It DOES, however, have the thumbnails and they're available through the View menu as before, and have a scroll bar. However, they don't appear to show facing pages as the old Pages does.

Ok - so back in the bin with Pages 5, now that I've looked at it again. They do appear to be gradually putting back some of the missing features, but they're not all there yet and I'll stick with '09, thank you!

Believe me, I never got very far into the manual either. But I'm used to looking at the bottom of the window for information in other programs (character count, etc.), so that trick found me!

Yes, scroll bars are nice. I even keep them always in view in the OS. However, I don't consider thumbnails to be a true "find" method, especially in the way Lorraine was asking for. Move to a known page? Sure. Move to a page with a particular image? Possibly, assuming it is large enough to be recognized. Move to pages with certain words? Not so much. Still, I leave the thumbnails visible all the time, even on a single page document. Even the "Go to..." function is limited to one knowing the page before actually getting there; in that case, the scrolling is probably faster and certainly less typing/clicking. It would also be easy to do on an iPad since it wouldn't cause the screen-real-estate-wasting keyboard to pop up. OTOH, how much (mostly text) document creation could one do without a keyboard...

I do hope Lorraine still has the original '09 versions of the document(s) if she's using the new apps!

Oh, dear, I'm afraid I must have the new and regressed version of Pages. I paid for the old version, but downloaded the new app on both our iPads and MBP. I guess I can use the thumbnail process, but it is very disappointing.

Don't give up!! Unless you actually deleted/trashed the old versions, they are still on your drive(s). Have you looked for them? (we need a fingers-crossed emoticon...) Of course, there are also your backups...

There may not be much "damage" done to the new Pages documents compared to the formatting of the originals. You may be able to use the old app's "Open" command to get into them. The real damage is done to Keynote docs; many of the transitions have been eliminated.

Because I'm lazy*, are you saying there is no "Find" command in the Edit (or any other) menus?

*If I un-archive the new versions to see what kind of 'find' abilities they have, I'll have to re-archive them when finished to prevent them from opening any iWork documents I might double-click.
