icons in "Get Info" box?
« on: September 28, 2014, 11:50:17 AM »
I'm running 10.9.4

In the past I have used the "get Info" window as a source for folder icons, selecting the icon & copying it to then paste it onto a folder.

Now, however, I just get a generic JPG symbol. (Same is true of PDFs, PNGs, etc.)

Is this a new preference is 10.9.4?

I see what you mean, Tom. My system is doing that too. It was also not displaying the icon previews either - fixed that by rebuilding the .ds_store files and launch services with Onyx, but the Get Info icons remain stubbornly generic.

I found lots of people complaining about this, but no solutions that worked when I tried them. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/531155...15&tstart=0 for example...

Anyone else have any bright ideas? It's not a deal-killer for me, since now that the image preview icons are showing in the Finder again, I'm reasonably happy, but they really should show in the Get Info window as well.

Gets a bit more complicated: I've discovered that the icons do show up with some JPGs, but I can't detect a pattern as to which ones work & which ones don't.

I am able to copy the iCal icon while using PathFinder Get Info and copying it onto a generic Folder icon in both PF and Finder Get Info windows/dialogs. I'll see how it goes the other way around, I'll pick a non-Apple icon, also.

Calendar icon copied from PathFinder Get Info dialog

Monosnap icon copied from Finder Get Info dialog

Works in Finder to Finder Get Info windows, also. This time I used the icon for MonoSnap, a screen capture app. These icons are fully enlargeable. I don't know what the OS version of the icon/images might be, I assume they are .png.

Actually, the icons are ".icns". doh.gif 1,024 x 1,024 pixels. I think they moved to that size in Mountain Lion from the 256 x 256 in earlier OSs. dntknw.gif Only real difference I see is how the app shows the selection. Finder's is slightly better, I think:

PathFinder - - - - - - - - - - - - - Finder

Is there a particular icon that's giving you trouble? If you really want it, you can usually find the ".icns" file in /Applications/the App icon you want directory.

What I want to do most frequently is take the icon from one of my images (normally from Photoshop) and use it on a newly-created folder. I have done this many times in the past, but now if the Get Info doesn't show the image, I am thwarted.

Forgot to mention, I'm now using 10.9.5. Perhaps this problem was fixed? dntknw.gif

I assume you mean a thumbnail image that becomes the icon? I'll try that...

Yep, took two different .psd icons from both Finder and PathFinder and replaced the Folder icons. 10.9.5 is the biggest difference between your actions and mine. Other than your vastly superior photography skills, anyway! blush-anim-cl.gif

I assume (danger!!) that Photoshop has a pref for "Image Previews"? In Elements I have "Always Save" plus check marks in "Icon" and "Windows Thumbnail". dntknw.gif

I've moved on up to 10.9.5 with no change.

Beginning to suspect that image files coming out of Adobe Lightroom are the ones showing the generic, but Photoshop files seem to work.

AhaH! I bought Lr last week after 'playing' with it for a month. I have to admit I dont even know what Lr appends to a saved/exported image. I have only had it hand off the work I've done to Elements where I might want to add some text in a particular place at a particular angle in a particular color, I'm a very particular guy!!!  laughhard.gif Therefore, I don't look at Lr files outside of Lr. wallbash.gif
