Are they reliable? Has anyone had any problems with the 17"? Pixels etc etc.
Were they upgraded in the generational jester?

Reason I'm asking I'm toying with the idea (well it's buzzing around in my head anyway) of picking one up from an associate.
This 17" most likely is one of the first that came out. Thus the generation question.
It seems to operate fine. Although I can only compare with the ones I've played with in the stores.
These folks very rarely used it [so they say. Yet everytime I've been there, it's on].
That's the 'why' they're selling it.
They are asking $450 but I think I can get it for $400.

The kicker is a monitor (of any sort) isn't even on my "too-get" list.
So it doesn't matter if I pass on it.
More curious about what the skinny is as to 'if it's a good deal' or not.
Know apple sells them for $600?.?
Haven't checked with any online retailer or ebay ... middle initial lazy. smile.gif

Friend of mine bought the 17 inch LCD two years ago next month and has left it on with G4 quicksilver (I think) 24/7. She and kids use it on/off day/night and if there were any problems, I would have heard about it for sure. Only thing she has mentioned is how cheap other brands are compared to what she spent back then.

I have had mine on my G4 Quicksilver for over a year with no problem - just bought one for my husband for his computer as a birthday present.  Consumer Reports rated it recently as the top 17" LCD, for what that's worth. thumbup.gif

BTW, retail price is $699 - no deals anywhere, either, except for one of the sites which has it for $694.  Not really significant!

Although $400 bucks is a sweet deal for an Apple 17" display, if I was you, I'd pay the extra $200 plus a applecare for the monitor.  The older 17" displays had some dead pixels here and there, which can be annoying.  Don't get me wrong.  These are great displays and should last quite awhile, but if you get a lemon that's in and out of the repair shop (and who know why their selling it? maybe their applecare just expired), the extra price for applecare is worth its weight in gold.  These babies are so expensive to fix, I'd let Apple extended warranties worry about it.

When my local dealer got his first one in he set it up on his display machine, I checked out out and found no dead or stuck pixels. It had been in use about 1 hr.  I bought it and have been using it Feb. 02 without a problem.
If you want to check the screen out, go to google and download pixel check. It checks out all five colors and is very easy to use.

When I purchased my 22" cinema, the VAR allowed me to do a pixel check before taking it home. That was almost three years ago. All continues as advertised.

In case anyone is interested (know I'm not) on closing this chapter .. book.

Guess the guy actually thought I was fish bait considering I've inquired about the 17" three times.
He started doing ... You know $400 is a awfully low. My price $450 is even too low. ...

Personally I couldn't of cared less for the monitor anyways.
So I offered him $300 cash and a free parking ticket (good for weekdays only) to Disneyland in Anaheim,Calif. smile.gif
Thought his wife was going to start screaming all kinds of no-no's at me for a second.!. <gr>
He said: Are you serious! Yeah and the ticket expires midnight on the 24th.

Hey Bill...

I know I'm late to the topic, but as I was reading down, I was thinking "300-350, tops".  I've had a 17 inch bought when they first became available, and I love it.  Not a single problem.  But used is used, and 50% of full price is fair.  Glad to see you came to the same conclusion.

Once you're on an LCD, it's really hard to go back.  I've tried.  So now I've gotta get one for home (20 inch).

For a while BMac I was working fairly close to the local mac dealer.
If I needed supplies for the job,lunch,haircut ... I'd head over there and play around on their 23" apple monster LCD.
They had an incredibly fast (mid 700s) DSL plus cable internet both.
DSL on their small showroom floor and the sales desk. In the back main office and the tech area was cable internet. Naturally there were two TVs back there also. smile.gif
Something went amiss [didn't ask] and the cable went bye bye. Their DSL is now down around the mid 400s download.
Back on that monster 23" LCD. Someone bought it and they haven't replaced it yet.
Now they have two 12" PBs sitting where it was. \sigh/

I'm happy with my 19" viewsonics though.
Maybe if one of these takes a swan dive I'll go for a 20" LCD.
The 23 incher is a hole lot of pizzas. Don't know if I could justify shelling out that kind of green. smile.gif
