Using version 5.0.9 on an old 350 iMac. It's been rock solid 'til a couple days ago when it stopped receiving. I've run Disk Warrior and before I reinstall I'm looking for hints.
My concern is that a reinstall might not keep past fax records intact.

Noticed that on incoming fax's when the speaker comes on there is a hum present that I don't remember from before. Might this be an indicator of a hardware rather than software problem?

Roger, it does sound like a possible hardware problem but I'd try a reinstall first.

Assuming you are using OS 9 you will find a STF folder in the System Folder with all the phonebooks, archives, fax in/out records. Copy that to a different partition. drive. etc. before reinstalling so you can retrieve old data if necessary.

Thanks Krissel that worked and after a reinstall I'm back where I was before.   Someone else had suggested the same thing but they sent me looking for that folder in preferences - needless to say it didn't show up.

I got a number of suggestions recommending I switch (or try) globalfax. Any opinion about that?

I don't do a lot of faxing and I've only used FaxStf beginning with 3.x something back with my old Performa. I have 5.0.4 now which plays fine with my upgraded 9600 and 9.1.

I don't know anything personally about other fax programs though I do recall some threads mentioning others, in particular for X.
