GPS Navigation iPhone5
« on: May 12, 2015, 11:20:19 PM »
SWMBO is still traveling quite a bit, and her faithful Tom Tom XL1 gps is beginning to show its age. A couple of "goofs" the last trip, not disastrous but major irritation.   She recently returned from a foray advising me that she had a conversation with a fellow traveler who was using Google Maps and her iPhone with the GPS activated. She really praised it, SOOOO instead of investing in another GPS The question is: Why not use the iPhone???.  I think I have figured out how.( fingers crossed and all that stuff).  The iPhone currently is Verizon Wireless, so I am assuming that when she travels the "cell phone data" must be turned on. She has gotten pretty astute and  and never goes over the 2gb existing plan.

Does anyone have any idea what the "data usage" might be for say a trip of say 2 hours might be ????  I cannot seem to get a clue.

Found a couple of forums that seem to indicate that the data usage is really minimal. She is heading out of town again, end of this week.  Gonna try it out, but will take ole faithful Tom Tom along for  back-up tho

Do report back on how things work. I'm taking a trip in August and am thinking of doing the GPS and iPhone thing.

I'm assuming (as much as I hate to do thatT that the 'destination' is not on the included maps available on the iPhone or the car? dntknw.gif I usually just use Google Maps to get started and then drag and drop the route to exactly what I want. Print out the text directions and sometimes a 'street view' of the destination. By the time I get near the end, the map in the car can show me most of what I want, but you can't beat a relatively new 'street view'. If you have friends nearby, I have asked them to stand outside my destination and wave a yellow and a red flag (never use only one colored flag! nono.gif )

Here are a few links you might want to scan:Except for one of those links, all say you need to have an app that can actually access the GPS info in your phone. Newer phones may be different. I suppose it's similar to the built-in accelerometer, there is no direct access to it in the installed apps. dntknw.gif

At least one link suggests making your route while you have WiFi access. Then, if the app supports it, you don't even need a cellular connection to use the route (absolutely no data usage!).

Good luck! And, don't get lost! Many truckers have! eek2.gif

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system
CAUTION! Childhood vaccinations cause adults!
