One last question on upgrading:

Should I:

1) Install the new OS on its own partition, and then use Migration Assistant to move all my 10.6.8 stuff over?

2) Or the approach I have been working on: Create a SD! clone of my 10.6.8 partition, and then apply the NewOS.app to it, and then do 'what else' ?

Will 2) work properly??

Jon, Paddy, ABD, Tacit - or anybody else that wants to chime in ???

I don't know if there is any advantage to installing a fresh OS and then migrating. Personally, I would do choice #2. It will be faster and easier than #1. If you run into trouble, you can always boot from the 10.6.8 clone, erase the Mavericks partition and do #1. Honestly, I don't think that you'll have any problem.

Oh yeah, another reason for having more than two choices is this math factoid from RHP: "Every time I have a fifty-fifty chance, 90% of the time I get it wrong!"

OK  Mavericks is installed !

I did 2) above, and it seemed to roll in without a hitch.

Thanks to all who chimed in while I was getting ready to install it.

A couple of issues so far:

1) I did a Disk Utility Repair Permissins thingy. It found a whole bunch of things with Epson Scanner in them. I have not had an Epson Scanner or printer since late in the days of Tiger. How do I get rid of all things Epson Scanner and Printer?

2) My Kensington Turbo Mouse is brain dead.  The Mouseworks control panel will not work (can't find the driver). I went on Kensington site, but got nothing when I searched for Turbo Mouse support.

All ideas welcome.

Now I have a lot of work to do to tune Mavericks and making it useful.

You should have asked about Epson printers. I could have answered that one. However, as a guess, you could look in /Library/Printers/Epson and see if scanners are listed there. If so, you can delete them, as well as printer drivers. In fact, you could delete the entire Epson folder and save a ton of hard drive space. If you ever get another Epson, you can always download the driver from the App Store.

Another thought (and probably a better one) is to open System Preferences > Printers and Scanners and delete any Epson thingies listed there.

As far as the mouse is concerned, see if this MacUpdate site helps. Ah, the wonders of Google! Speaking of App Store, see if there's anything there for your situation.

Another thought occurred to me (an extremely rare occurrence; my wife has alerted the media). The mouse driver may be PPC only and, since Mavericks cannot use Rosetta, it won't work. Since that site says that you need OS 10.2.8 or later, it's likely that this is the case.

Version 3.0r1 Mouseworks is the version I have on my SL partition.

It does not work on Mavericks.

Not only is Jon efficient with the alphabet, he's also a faster typist!

There may be an Uninstaller with "Epson" on the name. Spotlight might find it. But Spotlight may not be finished creating its database, the first one usually takes hours... In the mean time, just look in
    /Library/Application Support, and also Printers
    ~/Library same as above
    Maybe the Utilities folder, also
BTW, you may notice that your user Library (~/Library) is no longer (normally) visible in Finder. wallbash.gif Apple doesn't think we are capable of treating it with due respect! OTOH, your System Library is easily accessed. wallbash.gif Anyway, if you'd like to have it in the Side Bar of a Finder window, just Open a Finder window (if there's not one already open). Now, hold down the option key, click the "Go" menu and there will be a "Library" item there. That's your user Library. Select it and the Finder window will open displaying what's in it. Just click, hold, and drag the window title (/Users/jack's_user_name/Library) into the Side Bar. Done. Fini. thumbup.gif There is a setting in the Finder prefs, but it sometimes fails to 'stick'.

I wouldn't worry about those error messages when repairing permissions. From everything that I have read, permission repair doesn't do too much anymore and may be a waste of time. I don't remember the last time that I did it. Besides, I have gotten those messages about Epson permissions and nothing seems amiss. They're probably among the 5 million or so "error" messages that can be ignored.

That's a very old mouse you have there, Jack. From the looks of things, it's either time for a new mouse/trackball or you could try SteerMouse.
