having been savaged by mackeeper would not like a repetition, are there any free pinball apps out there that do not have gremlins or a virus of any sort.

Safest place to check is the Mac App Store. It's not purfekt, but you'll at least know it's been through some minimal inspections. I can't remember the last time I downloaded anything from anywhere other than the developer's site or the MAS. YMMV, of course.
