I noticed a strange and unfamiliar icon on my Menu Bar this morning. Then I noticed it was animated! DropBox does that when it syncs, TimeMachine used to. Having not a fearful bone in my body, I heartily clicked the icon! OK, I did put on some safety glasses! I may be stupid, but I'm very safety conscious!
However, nothing much happened. Here is a screen grabs of what I was seeing:
What this doesn't show is the 'animation'.
The gear was rotating, clockwise, continuously.
Mail was running.
Activity
Monitor had a process called com.apple.MailServiceAgent only using any cpu cycles occasionally.
I Quit Mail (which also shut down
Spam
Sieve), but that had no effect on the mysterious 'gear'; it just kept on ticking (silently, apparently well oiled). I can't remember if it was still showing in
AM, but I'm pretty sure it was. I gave up searching for anything to do with 'spinning|gear|in|Menu|Bar|etc.'. Although there was a mention in a
SS forum back in 2011 or so, but it had a different cause.
Another clue was that the icon could not be removed (command-drag) from the Menu Bar, which is a sure sign of an OS installed icon.
My solution was a Restart in Safe Mode, and then a normal Restart. The icon never appeared in either of those situations.
