Thunderbird 38.1
« on: July 25, 2015, 12:17:50 PM »
Anyone else using this version of Thunderbird? I was quite happy with the previous version where everything worked nicely. Now I have folders of mail that show up with * in the title when new mail lands there, and I don't know why the * is showing up. They added a program called Lightning that used to be an add-on, but now it's part and parcel of the program. I found it annoying and turned it off. Why didn't they just leave it as an add-on?

I'd switch to Apple Mail, but it hates my domain and I can't resolve that problem (the issues shows up in Apple Notes and various other Apple programs that reach out to my domain), plus Apple Mail refuses to auto-check for emails. I'm starting to wish we could go backwards about 10 years. wink.gif

Hi Kim,

As far as I know, those asterisks have been there all along denoting new mail. On my machine, they are blue, the same color of my highlight preference. Out of curiousity, I upgraded today just to see what it looked like. Doesn't seem much different, with the exception of the Lightning pane, which as you noted, is turned off easily.

Maybe there's a way to change that part of the display in the Preferences panel, but I didn't see any way to do that.

Dunno.

Yup, discovered the explanation late yesterday — the * is supposed to only who up when you have a subfolder(s) and one folder contains new mail. I didn't have the * until this upgrade. Apparently there's a minor bug in TB, because other folks have also reported that the * didn't show up until this upgrade. Now that I know what it is, I try to ignore it. wink.gif

Thanks, Chris.

How are you 'normally' supposed to know there is new mail in a sub-folder? In Mail, I keep all my sub-folders hidden/folded(?) to save space in the list of 'mailboxes'/folders.

Good question, and one I can't answer as all my sub-folders are used as "storage" and nothing is ever filtered into them (I move emails manually). I'm guessing that the main folder was simply bolded and the user had to open it up and look—but that's a guess on my part.

Yes, I have filters for email – for current email. However, when an email is old and in the way, I manually select it and move it into the archive folder. It works nicely for me. smile.gif

OK, I also manually move stuff, sometimes, usually the Trash! I guess it's not always possible to set a time for that kind of event ie; 1 month, 1 year, etc. I'm still confused (by my never having used Thunderbird), as to how you know if current mail has been filtered to a mailbox/folder that is not 'open' to view. It probably doesn't really work that way, there must be some indication that there is an unread message in the folders in view, even if it's in a subfolder that is not in view. wallbash.gif

I could possibly do the time thing, but some things need to be archived right away, others in a few months, and others I keep in the main folder for over a year until the issue is resolved. wink.gif

I know there's unread mail in a folder/mailbox because the name of the folder/mailbox shows up in BOLD, just like Apple Mail (if I'm remembering correctly). The only difference is now there's an asterisk if the main folder has a sub-folder. My understanding is that the asterisk has been there for a few upgrades for most users, but for some users (that would be me) the asterisk just showed up with the latest upgrade.

I think Mail just shows a 'dot' with the number of unread messages. The number includes any unread stuff in all the enclosed folders/mailboxes. Thunderbird may use an asterisk to avoid an UI suit! wink.gif

Hi Kim,

Well, after playing around in this new version of Thunderbird, I too have come across an aggravating little difference in how it doesn't work like the older program. In the Window menu, any message you were working on would show up as (Compose)... Now you have to go to the Drafts Folder to find the message you were working on if you switched to reading an incoming message or went to another program temporarily. The new draft message would show up in both places. And it was generally much easier to go back to the message in the Window menu, and it doesn't show there any more.

A little GRRR...

Yeah, I stumbled across that yesterday, and it was a minor annoyance. I've always liked TB because of it's simplicity and if I wanted bells and whistles, there were add-ons galore. I may have to spend time next week working on getting Apple Mail to function correctly. Ugh.

Sounds like a paranoid' attempt to prevent you from losing any message "in-progress". I can see saving it if you Quit the app, but it sounds like this happens anytime the "in-progress" window is not active? Or at least TB is not the front app...

Mail just saves an "in-progress" window/message if it's open when you Quit. That message is just in a window of its own until you either send it or close it on purpose, and then you still have the choice of 'saving it' as a draft. But that does allow one to totally lose the work if you don't correctly read the warning. dntknw.gif

As for Mail not functioning properly, I'd say that is a pretty high priority. There must be something wrong in Denmark... or maybe Cupertino? wink.gif
