New printer

Hoping for some good opinions/advise. I would like to replace my aging HP printer. It does color and scans, although it's scanning ability is terrible. I'd like a decent printer with good scanning ability (mainly for old photos), but I’m not adverse to buying both a printer and a scanner. I don't care if it prints in color. I've even considered a laser printer, but that seems a bit extreme—or maybe that's just me. Here's what I'd like:

decent print quality
good scanning ability for photos (but I'd buy separate items for this)
wi-fi ability so I can print from my laptop

Apple has several printers shown on their web site, some with good reviews and some not; but I'm hoping you folks can give me your opinions as end users.

My Epson Stylus Photo R2880 is terrific for photos, but I'm very fussy. It might be more printer than you need or budget for. Still, I have been happy with it.

My 2¢.

I really like my new Canon MG 7520 scanner/printer.

Excellent scans, very good print quality.

Bonus: You can print on printable CD/DVD's if you would like that capability.

I'm getting used to scanning and printing, and my opinion improves with use.

I got the white model from Amazon.  Shipped from Beach Camera via FedEx - arrived really fast.

$107 - good price.

Conections - WiFi, USB, Ethernet.

I'm using mine via USB.

Just got a new HP Envy 7640 AIO, due to the same day failure of 2 others (both HPs).
Have not had a chance to test out the scanning or photo printing, but the straight up printing is very good.. Only draw back is that it has a combo-color ink cart and a separate black... But all the 'home-small office' printers are so configured...only the 'office' models have all separate inks...but they have no separate photo paper tray....trade offs...

YMMV

A friend also had problems with HP failures. I wonder if their quality control is not what it should be...

I previously bought only Epson because they were easy to find re-fill able carts. Now I have  Canon Pro 100, 8 color (2 shades of blue, red, grey a black and a yellow). Outstanding color, WiFi & USB. I got it because I needed dick printing and better network sharing. I finally bought a real scanner to rep done that barely managed 72dpi! laughhard.gif

Lasers are still marginally cheaper and almost all now print duplex, but I really like the Canon for photo prints! I can re-fill all 8 carts and reset the 'usage' meters in less than 20 minutes. If I just refill the (usual) low ink cart, it's around 5 minutes, so I just do all of them! wink.gif

RNK and Jim, thanks for the info on the printers. I'll look at both of those as well.

So what scanner did you buy and are you happy with it? I want one that has good dpi, and also can scan a small photo at high res and give me a larger size pic that I can work with. So many of my older photos are tiny and I'd like to actually see the faces again. laugh.gif

The scanner I bought and am well pleased is an Epson Perfection V500 PHOTO. USB only, doesn't share well (as in none that I could get to work). Forgot the specs, they may have improved since I bought, anyway. Look for the 'native' scanning resolution, beware of multi-pass, extremely high numbers. rolleyes.gif This one does 'legal' length paper, you may not need that.

Thanks very much. That particular model has been discontinued, but I'd been looking at it's replacement. Easier to buy a printer when I don't need it for scanning capabilities.

Thanks all. Once I make my final decision and have the installed and running, I'll report back.

Careful, the replacement doesn't come with the better photo 'fixing' software the 'original' did... Not familiar with the replacement softwares, but you might want to compare the two from that angle...

I think she already has PSE or even Photoshop. I'm partial to Lightroom, but even PSE can open Raw images and do considerable editing in that. I think most "editing" software from hardware makers is, at best, klugey and even worse, ported from Windows 98(?). laughhard.gif

Yup, I have Photoshop and PSElements, so I'm covered there; but I appreciate the helpful words of advice.
