Deleting a mailbox in Mavericks?
« on: August 16, 2015, 03:08:56 PM »
Hey guys,
I'm using Mac's Mail on my Macbook pro, and last night I ran Disk Utility, and when I fired up Mail this morning, in the list of mailboxes, on the left hand side, is one called, "Flagged", and when I highlight it, and then click on Mailbox, the "Delete Mailbox" is greyed out.  I've gone to the library in my account, opened up the Mail, and there is no mailbox called "Flagged", can anybody tell me how to get rid of this?  I know it's no big deal, but things like this just bother me. . . wallbash.gif   As usual, thanks in advance!

I think you are just seeing the built-in "smart" mailbox that contains any messages that you've flagged. I assume there is a "flag' icon next to that label, correct? If there is no number on that line, you simply don't have any 'flagged' messages.

Yeah, it's just weird that I've never seen it before, Jim; I can live with it, but, man, I hate mysteries, when it comes to my computers. . . Thanks for the answer!

I use quite a few 'rules' to move stuff to appropriate mailboxes, but I don't have more than a couple of "smart" folders! blush-anim-cl.gif I do use 'flags' a good deal, however. wink.gif

Well, Jim; all's well that ends well; I ran a "Verify Disk" from the Disk Utility, and it said the disk needed to be repaired.  Did that, and then ran Disk Warrior, and everything is back and running very nicely!  No more flagged mailbox; the thing that made me do that, was that I sent someone an email, and the Outbox also stayed in the list of mailboxes. . . Glad I sprang for DW, again!

Yeah, the "Outbox" is supposed to disappear; it's only a temporary thing! Thanks for the info/update!

I seem to always always have some 'Flagged' messages, so that mailbox stays around. blush-anim-cl.gif

BTW, and you probably already know this, if you start a message and then try to close its window, you'll be asked if you want to Cancel, Save, or Delete that message. If you "Save" it, you'll see a "Drafts" mailbox appear. Naturally, if you later send that draft, you'll see the "Outbox" momentarily and the "Drafts" will either disappear of the number indicator will decrease by one.

Unless you have Rogers/Yahoo and use IMAP, in which case, several times a day you will need to delete random "Draft" emails that you actually have sent, because Yahoo/Mail seem to have some real difficulties with this whole synching thing. dry.gif

Of course, if you have a considerable volume of email as I generally do, half the time you sit there wondering "did I send that, or not??" and then you have to check in the "Sent" folder to make sure. Grrrrr.... (and no, doing a force sync of  the draft folder doesn't fix it - I've tried that. Sometimes restarting Mail does, but who the heck wants to do that?)

Touché...

OTOH, (noque on would) they've been pretty reliable lately. On the second hand, I haven't needed to contact them about anything... They've even been kind enough to notify us (me) when our data usage approaches the extra charge level each month. Sometimes Judy has an unquenchable need for Netflix and with the normal demands of the two teens in the house... laughhard.gif I'm almost afraid to monitor my 24/7 uploading of weather data, even though it's only every two minutes... blush-anim-cl.gif Maybe Lil' Snitch would provide that? dntknw.gif
