Safari on an iPad
« on: August 17, 2015, 02:36:27 PM »
I bumped into a major problem the other day. I was using Safari on my iPad (not the newest, bought it Feb 2014), when the site I was at had an ad pop up at the bottom. I ignored it until I accidentally brushed it with my finger and was spirited to a scam page. My options were "agree to let us dump junk on your iPad" or ... nothing. I tried forcing Safari to quit by hitting the home button twice and swiping up, but when I reopened Safari the offending page was still there. So I shut down the iPad, waited about 10 minutes and restarted. Safari was still stuck.

My only option, as far as I could find in researching, was to go to general settings and dump all history and cache in Safari - which I did. Of course, because it all syncs I lost everything from Safari on my iMac as well, which was annoying as I had a link in history I wanted to go back to ... and please don't tell me I should have bookmarked it - I know that. wink.gif  wallbash.gif

Still I don't understand why there isn't an adblock extension for Safari on an iPad. Or maybe there's a better way to have solved my problem. If so, I'd appreciate knowing.

When you say 'shut it down' I take that to mean holding the power button down
till you get the 'swipe to shut off' indicator... Rather than just getting a black screen on the iPad...

I have run into similar situations, but have always managed to get out of them with either a full power off or a swipe 'throw away'...

Hope you find a solution...let us know how or what you find out..

Yes, that's what I did.

So far, the only answer I've found was to dump all history and cache in Safari on the iPad. Not a happy solution.

I suppose you actually want the two different apps to be synced? I don't have them that wat, and I can see why I never would. One rescan I rarely use the app on the iDevices is the lack of extensions, but even more so because I can't have URLMPro on them! Having a "walled garden" is, at best, a misnomer, losing things because they are synced is worse! rant.gif

Your symptoms sounded similar to ones I thought we'd discussed at TS, although I can't find them. The point is, since you have your Safari mobile and Desktop apps somehow synced, next time it may be better to access the app from the Desktop side first.

Probably best to un-sync first. Fix the problem, if possible, on the Desktop app, then re-sync. Hopefully, the latest data over-writes the previous versions of whatever is synced.

The earlier reports were concerned with the browser 'locking' the user into an endless loop requiring either the payment of a ransom or downloading more software of obvious danger. The fix was rather simple; deleting files in the /Library and ~/Library. Those kinds of actions are virtually impossible on an iDevice. rolleyes.gif

BTW, how does one "sync" mobile and Desktop apps?! I assume via iCloud? dntknw.gif

Now here you have me stumped. I never set it up that way. The iPad is the one I bought for Sneakers and the settings are still the ones he set up. It even welcomes Sneakers when you open certain apps. I can't bring myself to wipe it and start fresh. wink.gif

I can tell you that when I bought it, I used my apple id at the apple store, so it is linked to me in some ways, and if Sneakers set it up for iCloud it would be my iCloud since I know he never set that up for himself. Now that I think about this, it might explain how some of my settings wound up in the cloud when I didn't turn them on. Duh!

I think I might hire my tech friend to stop by and fix this all for me.

Kimmer, I don't think you need to hire anyone. Go into iCloud on the Mac (whichever one is syncing with the iPad) in Preferences and see which apps are checked - those are the ones that sync. Uncheck the ones you don't want to sync. (I'm not sure if it's necessary to uncheck Safari on both devices or if doing it on the Mac alone will suffice - might want to test and report back!) And then do the same on the iPad. There is lots more you can do if you want, around the entire privacy/syncing issue.

See: http://www.quepublishing.com/articles/article.aspx?p=2192908

Of course, there are advantages to having them synched, too: http://fieldguide.gizmodo.com/how-to-sync-...ne-a-1689351139

I think I turned off syncing (via the System Pref) for just about everything. It must set to connect to everything by default or when you upgrade a System. rant.gif I noticed that I was being asked to enter my Apple ID EIGHT times every time I'd start up my mini. I discovered I only had to click "Cancel" twice! Guess which method I started using? rolleyes.gif Same thing (but only one request) was happening on my iPhone!

I'm sure Apple sees this as a security aid; keeps anyone from getting to your iCloud stuff just by stealing an iDevice. I saw it as an extremely un-friendly UX. wallbash.gif Un-syncing seems to have stopped all these pointless nags on the mini, or it may be because it's running 24/7 gathering and uploading weather info. dntknw.gif

More info on the frustrating browser highjacking: <MacIssues,August 21, 2015 by Topher Kessler>. The blog suggests the problem is fixed in the upcoming version of Safari, however, in a test on that page, my current version seems to be in control of the problem. One setting I'm sure most of you are using is the "Block Pop-ups" pref. That needs to be enabled, anyway. wallbash.gif
