More information, please.

Which OS are you using? Which browser, including version number? Does this happen with all websites? If only with some, post links so we can try to duplicate the issue.

Does the message offer a purported link to the Java download? It might be spurious.

One question down, two to go. wink.gif Now I'll add two more!
4. Can you provide a URL or link to the site,? It's rare to have a public site require Java, at all.
5. Is this a site you use in your job?
Thanks!
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

Let me explain that this annoying window comes up when I am using my browser Safari or even Chrome, and it is not down to a particular website. It insists that I need java for my macbook pro.

I installed it, and it still keep on asking me to update it.

It keeps on leading me to this website https://www.java.com/en/download/mac_download.jsp

1. Are there sites where this never happens?

2. Can you post a link to a site where it does happen?

3. Is this behavior consistent with that site?

A couple things:

You may need to activate Java in your particular browser:

https://www.java.com/en/download/help/enable_browser.xml

Or maybe the application is using the older Java 6 from Apple which also needs to be updated:

https://www.java.com/en/download/faq/yosemite_java.xml

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572?locale=en_US

Step #1. Please check to see if you have a "Java" item in your System Preferences. The easiest way to see your System Prefs is to click on the black apple icon on the extreme left-hand end of the Menu Bar.

If you have installed Java, there will be an item/icon with that name in System Prefs. Click on it to open it. It will actually open it's controls in a separate window rather than listing various settings/controls the usual way.

Step #2. The first thing to check is a statement near the bottom of the "General" section. Mine says, "Java in the browser is disabled." What does yours say?

Step #3. Once you get the "Java Control Panel" open, click the "Security" label/tab. The first item is a checkbox for "Enable Java content in the browser". That box probably is not checked (or "ticked" as some Englishmen are wont to say! wink.gif ). If that box is already checked, please report back:
    A. Which "Security level" item is selected
    B. Are there any entries in the "Exception Site List"?

I suspect Step #3 will solve the repeated requests for installing Java, however, please let us know. wink.gif

.

Step 1. Java disabled for current user only
Step2. Java in the browser is disabled.
Step 3. Not checked

There ya go!

To view this web content, you need to install the Java Runtime Environment
If it's "web content" you must be using a browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc.) so you will need to check/tick those boxes in Step #1, 2 and 3. In other words, you will have to enable Java for yourself (the current user), enable Java in a browser, and enable Java content in the browser.

I would also recommend selecting the highest "Security" level possible, as mentioned in Step #3.

It won't hurt to shut down whatever browser you are using and even do a complete computer shut down and then a complete start up. Please let us know how things go. wink.gif

Let me explain explain something here - I had it enabled and I was still getting the notices and when you posted disable I still got them - good answers, but it doesn't work - it is frustrating enough and I guess another thing you have to live with...... Whether I disable or enable the java runtime window comes on again and again.

That's life!

I'm a bit confused. I never "posted disable" on this thread. My last post stated that you should ENable in three separate places. Enabling in only one or two places will not be enough. wink.gif

There is a possibility that you have the newest version of Java and not the one that the site wants, or vice versa. A screen shot of the dialog requesting that you install might be helpful. Another piece of useful info is the version number of the installed version of Java. Open the System Pref named "Java", when it then opens the "Java Control Panel", select the "General" tab and then click the "About" button. Again, a screen shot of the small window would be great.

BTW, press and hold the "shift", "command", and then the "4" key will change the cursor to a 'cross' that you can drag diagonally from one top corner to the opposite lower corner of anything on your screen to grab that area as a screen shot. Simply press those keys and click and hold the mouse button down to set the starting point. When you have selected what you want, just release the mouse button. The screen shot image will be saved as a ".png" file, normally in your "Pictures" folder. You can then use the TS Full Editor function to upload the images and put them into a post. There are more detailed instructions about doing that at <this post>. thumbup.gif

Thank you I had an inferior version and now have updated - you solved it - many thanks!
