Any 1Password users?
« on: September 03, 2015, 02:53:25 PM »
I'm strongly considering setting up 1Password on my Macs, iPhones (2) and iPad because I feel as though I'm losing control of the situation. Now I use Keychain to remember & autofill websites, etc.

I've been watching tutorials but before I'm ready to commit, there are questions I have:

If you use 1Password, as I understand it, a new, complex password will be created in place of the ones I'm currently using. So if I am on somebody else's computer, how would I know how to log in?

So sites have very specific rules about passwords (just so many characters, some have to be numbers, some punctuation, etc.). How does 1Password match its' password to these rules?

Would I disable Keychain in favor of 1Password? And if it is disabled, it seems that it will be hard for me to remember my dozens of existing logins.

Suppose I am away from home & create a 1Password login for a site, but then my wife (back at home) goes to that same site, how would she know that the 1Password login exists?

I guess I'm also asking if those of you you use 1Password are happy with it.....

I am sure our resident 1Password expert, ABD, will be along soon to help and explain.  He is a long time, enthusiastic user....  (oh, oh,,, think I just recall the he is away on vacation, so he may or may not be available for immediate consultation.)

But he will have, or make up, the answers to any questions you might have.
I have long had many of the same questions you have, especially sharing of sign-ons with my wife...

I’m not the expert that others are, but here's my quick answers.

QUOTE

1Password will NOT override any of your current passwords automatically. I’ve never had it even ask me if I wished to do so. If I, on my own, ask 1Password to create a new password for a site, then it does that and asks if I wish to update my login.

QUOTE

There are options within 1Password for all these things.
  • strength
  • length
  • “Password recipe”
    • pronounceable
    • digits
    • symbols

See attached graphic for a bit more info.

It’s been ages since I did this (and I've not disabled Keychain - but would to know how to do so), but I’m pretty sure there instructions at agilebits on how to export the Keychain and then import it all into 1Password.

QUOTE

I have 1Password use my dropbox acct to store it’s support file. This is accessible to me on my iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro, and my iMac. If you and your wife can both access the same dropbox acct, this would work for you.

TOTALLY!

I'm no expert, there are plenty of people who know more about this app than I do. However, I have been able to 'teach' my wife... laughhard.gif

1. ...as I understand it, a new, complex password will be created in place of the ones I'm currently using.
Nope. It can be used with that sites "Change/Edit/etc." password that any good site would have. But you will have to do the 'old password' entry manually. Of course, you could also just create a set of passwords you already have (from memory or however you have them 'secured' someplace, even KeyChain). You could then log in with the old p/w with 1Password and then use the app when you use the 'change/edit/etc.' function on the site.

2. [Some] sites have very specific rules about passwords [...]. How does 1Password match its' password to these rules?
wink.gif It doesn't even try! A good site will tell you what its p/w rules are, if there are any. A poor will let you know what 'rule' you have violated. A terrible will simply clear all the fields and make you guess what the rules are!!! If there are rules/limits, you can adjust a couple of sliders in the 1Password password generator. Otherwise, I usually select at least 14 characters to include upper & lowercase letters, digits, symbols (*, %, $, @, etc.)., avoid 'ambiguity', and dis/allow repeats. There is a "Recipe" to set all this up in the password generator.

3a. Would I disable Keychain in favor of 1Password?
No need to, it actually stores some things besides passwords, anyway.
3b. f it is disabled, it seems that it will be hard for me to remember my dozens of existing logins.
That's rather the main point of 1PW; not having to remember any
site's password. 1PW does this for you! When you hit the 'Login' page, you simply click the 1PW menu icon and 1PW will offer all passwords saved for that url (sometimes a site may require different login info for different areas). You then either tap 'return' of scroll to the desired choice and hit 'return'! At no time is your password ever visible... unless you specifically want to see it, of course.

4. Suppose I am away from home & create a 1Password login [...] wife (back at home) [...] how would she know that the 1Password login exists?
Sounds like you'll be creating a shared group of passwords (for you & your wife), to be used on multiple computers/mobile devices. 1PW can sync between various machines, anything that can run the app, so all machines will always be using the same collections of passwords. DropBox might be the best way to do this for you, since you may in two completely different parts of the world. Otherwise, you can use WiFi or your local network.

There is one thing that may trip you up in this shared password collection; how will the second person know there is a new p/w? You could text/email/phone(!) the other person and tell them a new p/w has been created for a site. NOTE: You do not tell them what the password actually is. Assuming  you are syncing things, all the other person needs to know is that there is new info stored for that site. Even if you don't tell the other(s), part of what 1PW stores is the URL for the site, so, if either of you don't have time to tell the other about a new site, just do a search in 1PW and it should pop up! This, of course, assumes it has had a few seconds to update/sync with the 'master' list. I would highly recommend you let your wife know about any site you where you create a p/w! yes.gif

I'm so glad I turned to Techsurvivors. Your answers made it all click in my brain. Of course 1Password can't change existing passwords without my active participation. Don't know what I was thinking...

So, to make the best use of 1Password, I should:

1. Begin using it to generate any new passwords from now on.

2. Invest some time changing many of my existing passwords, using 1Password to generate new entries. I would use Dropbox to sync.

A couple of more questions...

Do you find logging in with 1Password easy to do on an iPhone/iPad?

How do you handle logging in when you are using somebody else's computer, or a public computer?

I have learned a couple of things today: 1. TS / Safari does not save carefully worded and exact answers when one turns on Airplane mode. 2. Never try to use an cellular device without a generous data plan because there seems to be no way to turn data usage OFF while maintaining phone service.

So... I'll attempt to answer the following questions fro this morning:
QUOTE
1. Do you find logging in with 1Password easy to do on an iPhone/iPad?
2. How do you handle logging in when you are using somebody else's computer, or a public computer?
1. The login process is exactly the same on all devices. There is nothing to do except enter your carefully created (by you, of course) and extremely important to remember 1Password password. The only difficulty is the "keyboard" on the iPhone. wink.gif After that, the interface is similar but smaller on the iPhone; a list of categories (All Items, Logins, Secure Notes, Credit Cards, Identities, Software Licenses, Email accounts) and a search box. clicking any of the categories brings up an alphabetical list of the items in that category. Entering something in the search box is an exercise left to the reader! tongue.gif

In iOS 8, 1PW was able to get Apple to allow it to be used in many of the 'share' options of many apps. I think that's the box with an arrow point up and out of the box. If you don't see "1Password" in the 'places' that can share data, try the "More..." button, also. If this function is setup in the app, it will 'talk' with 1PW and handle the data transfer, automagically. Your least exciting action is to copy and paste the data from 1PW as needed. 1PW will close and require you to log in again, when you leave it to open the original app in order to paste in the data. "It's a feature, not a bug!", but it can be frustrating... I just have to remind myself that iOS is not a "real" OS. laughhard.gif

2. If you don't have your iDevice or laptop with you (where your 1Password app is installed), you'll be "up the proverbial creek/crick". Even if you have a device with the app installed on it, you'll still need to type it in on the non-owned computer. This can be a big security risk on a public computer/network or even a friends PC; you have no convenient way to assure that there aren't data/key loggers between you and the "secure" site. You'll have to make that decision on your own, or make use of VPN. That's beyond my pay grade Just like most of the rest of the interweb!!

Sorry for the delay, you get the same excuse I got when our train had to stop behind a slower one or take a siding to allow one by: "Sit down, shut up, and keep your feet off the seats!" eek2.gif scram.gif

Anyway, hope this helps! BTW, didn't kimmer do a great job on explaining things? clap.gif

Actually, you're NOT up a creek without your own device with 1Password. There's something called 1PasswordAnywhere. You will have to at least remember your Dropbox login, but if you can do that, you'll be able to access your 1Password logins.

https://support.1password.com/guides/mac/1p...rdanywhere.html

I'm an avid 1Password user, but unlike the rest of you, I still create my own passwords. Why? Well...a lot of the time I'm creating passwords for clients - and quite frankly, I DON'T want them to go changing them because THEY can't remember them; it just creates more problems for me if that happens and they need help with something. So, I try to create something memorable, though never "easy" - complex and long, but at least having some meaning to them. 1Password tells you how you're doing when you create a password; sometimes it takes a few attempts to create something strong.

As for changing your passwords, Thomas - only do that if you've got weak passwords.

BTW - changing passwords all the time as some sort of security thing is generally pointless (and tends to encourage the use of weak passwords). http://www.howtogeek.com/187645/htg-explai...your-passwords/

Thanks for the heads-up on 1PasswordAnywhere. I didn't know that was available.

If it's a password that I use on a regular basis, I think it up myself. I started doing this after I got stuck at the bank and needed my password so they could help me with my online banking. This was pre-cell phone days, so I wound up coming home, looking it up, and going back to get help. That meant a 64 mile drive to solve my problem. So now I create my own quite often.

I don't think he plans on changing any of them without a reason. I think he'll simply create 1PW entries for at least some of what he has. Which brings me too a very important interface option I forgot to mention: blush-anim-cl.gif 1PW will automatically create a record of your username, password, and the login URL, just by going to the login site you use for something. You enter your info, just like you always do (from memory) and as soon as you click/press enter, 1PW will pop up a small dialog asking if you'd like to use the info you just entered as a 'log in' for "usually some text including the domain name of that site". Just click "Yes/OK/Sure" and you're through! wink.gif

BTW, if you haven't figured it out yet, there are two basic methods of using 1PW:
1. Just go to the site you normally do (probably a bookmark), at the login page/area click on the 1PW icon in the menu bar or the one it can install for various browsers. There may be more than one offering, but one of them should be recognizable because of the name you created for it. Scroll down to that item or press return, if it's already selected (+95% of the time).
2. Select the 1PW icon (either place, as above) and type a few letters of the name of the site or its URL. As you do that, 1PW will search its database and start offering suggestions. You may find the site you want right away or select from the list which will get shorter the longer you type. This way, 1PW will tell the browser to go to the site and it will also paste in your login info! :thumb up:

A (no charge) Tip: Some sites don't always play well with apps that paste in passwords/usernames; you'll discover them when 1PW does it for you and the site complains or says you didn't enter the correct info, even when you know you did. The way around this, normal, is to click the "Never Submit" item in the 'submit' pop up list near the bottom of each log in record. Of course, this does mean you'll have to press a key of click a mouse button... but it's still faster than cutting/pasting or typing! This often happens with banks. rolleyes.gif wallbash.gif
