Has anyone tried to update a VM to Windows 10?
« on: July 28, 2016, 08:20:37 PM »
ARGH!!!!

I am currently on my 5th or 6th attempt at installing "free" Windoze 10 on VMWare Fusion. The deadline is in two days - after that it's not free anymore - and costs anywhere from $119 for an "OEM" version of the Home Edition up to $149 for the retail version from Microsoft. More if you want the "Pro" version. Unbelievable...first I attempt to install it and it gets stuck at 92%. Next time... 99%. Next time...black screen of death. Somehow managed to get out of that, then did more reading and decided I needed to update Windows 7, first, which I hadn't bothered running for months. It tells me that there are 266 "critical" updates I have to download and install, and then it goes into some endless download and do nothing loop. More investigation. More restarts. *think* I finally managed to get the updates installed - though how or why, I have no clue. I did get myself into the command line as administrator (a real administrator, as opposed to the fake administrator that is the default in Windows 7...don't you just love an OS that LIES to you?) and quit and then restarted the Windows Update and that seems to have finally done the trick. I'm now at 84% of the latest attempt at Windows 10. Oh - and I switched to a trial version of Parallels in there for a while - but all it does is sit there and "search" for updates on Windows 7. For HOURS and hours. Windows 7 works just fine (and is readable, which is more than I can say for VMWare on a retina iMac - my choices are big and fuzzy without VMWare Tools, or too small to read, but nice and sharp, with VMWare Tools installed. I am hoping that Win 10 will be better in that regard.)

Anyway - it makes any issues I've ever had with my Mac look like child's play. This is enough to make one tear one's hair out. And judging by what I've read on forums, this is far from unusual. dry.gif

After a few random incantations, and just leaving it alone overnight...success! Just in the nick of time too. tongue.gif

I guess we should congratulate you on your success, while offering our sympathies in your having to use Windows. cheer.gif cheer2.gif deadhorse.gif laughhard.gif
