Upgrade to El Capitan
« on: September 17, 2016, 06:33:42 AM »
After finding out that support for 10.8.5 is going away... from Apple and Firefox... I decided to go ahead, take the plunge and upgrade to El Capitan Thurs. night. Wouldn't want to ruin my reputation for procrastination...  whistling.gif

All in all far as I can tell everything went OK except for a couple of niggly little things. A little app or three bit the dust and don't work anymore but that's OK. One thing that's driving me a bit batty at the moment is that some of my sound effects appear to be "hosed". For eg. OS X's Mail App doesn't want to play it's various alerts etc. anymore. I have the setting to play the sounds for "all" events not just the inbox and so forth but it steadfastly refuses. I got used to listening for the feedback of the sound played to signify no new mail when checking manually but it now just flashes a quick message down at the bottom of the mailbox list etc. and tends still to ignore everything but the inbox for new mail...

Not a big deal, just wondering if anyone else noticed anything with notification and alert sounds. Gotta get some sleeeeep now...  blink.gif   rolleyes.gif

Try toggling that setting off and on. That might work (worth a try, anyway).

OK... another problem... just started after update:On either restarting or shutting down and starting or log out/log in on the machine... the screen that comes up has this "thing" on it:... the First Aid text suggests repairing/verifying color profiles... OK, so I do that and this is the the result:So??? I haven't the foggiest dog's idea in the world of what to do about that one.  wallbash.gif Everything LOOKS OK to me... the display, printing etc

I found this problem all over the net, but here's one:

https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1016170

... ok ok ok... I can easily do what they say there... "ignore it"... however... how the bloody earth do I get stupid ColorSync to cease and desist from giving me the dumb window I have to look at and click to shut everytime I log out, restart or shut and start up again.  wallbash.gif wallbash.gif wallbash.gif

Sorry, I can't ignore that... it's a pain in the nethers!!!

I decided to go back to Mountain Lion, 10.8.5 via Time Machine... not sure of what to do next.

I did check to see if the problem with ColorSync is also present in this OS and whadya' know... it IS! I ran the verify function of ColorSync and it turned up a problem with the same 4 color profile files. At least here it has not started showing a stupid error message upon startup or logging in of the machine. Still requires caution though... after I ran the verify, I restarted the machine and all sorts of things in my dock were messed up. I was able to put them right however. What I did before running ColorSync was move several items I had in a folder I called "Third Party Utilities" into the OS's Utilities folder... was that what set ColorSync off? I dunno but all the affected dock items had been in that folder.

I suspect ColorSync.app has a massively annoying bug in it and apparently it's been there for a long time... want to take bets on how long Apple will ignore this one?  Thinking.gif
... or Adobe, could be. The profiles are all in the Application Support folder for Adobe...

HA! I don't even know what your first image is displaying! I think it's a Finder window, correct? I can't remember the last time I used Finder, so it's hard to recognize one, especially with extra stuff in the Toolbar. I assume some app is forcing that window to open?

When you Restart or Shutdown, do you have the "Reopen windows when logging back in" checked?

You can certainly move those color profiles into a folder outside their current location and then do a Restart/Shutdown to see if the same error occurs. I have a few ICC files (70 according to ColorSync Profile Utility), but mostly from paper companies. ButI don't have PS or any of Adobe's CC stuff. I don't even have the "...Adobe/Color..." directories or any of the .icc files.

As for where these files come from, you can do a Get Info on them and look for the "UTI" entry. That should help identify the creator or source. I suspect yours will show something like "UTI: com.adobe...".

I have Adobe CS6 and (luckily) haven't seen this issue.

See this thread: https://www.macissues.com/2014/06/12/how-to...ofiles-in-os-x/

Also, it's usually not a good idea to go moving things unless you KNOW it won't cause problems. Anything that installs with an installer, as opposed to drag and drop, tends to put things in various different places on your HD and you run the risk of making things nonfunctional if the bits aren't where they're supposed to be.

You could also try deleting the problematic profiles; there also seem to be duplicates for them on my Mac. There are some in Adobe/Color/Profiles and what appears to be exactly the same file (same size, name & creation date) in Adobe/Color Profiles (which are NOT the ones it's complaining about.) You could try making copies of these and parking them in the /Color Profiles folder and see if the errors go away. No harm in trying at this point.

Maybe reinstall CS 6 or Photoshop? It's definitely NOT a universal issue, so a fresh install might help.

OK... I'm afraid I am soooo confused!  wacko.gif blink.gif

I did see the link you have... when I searched for the issue.

I don't think moving the items I did caused a problem as they were drag and drop installs and since I put the dock straight there's been no further issue. I don't get the annoying startup message in 10.8.5, that was only happening in 10.11.6 and I have no idea why.

I am able to delete the problem profiles but the start up message stays... every one of the problems I've had leads back to ColorSync.
If I delete them then all the rest are OK however. I did keep an archive of them in the folder in case just "deleting" them was an issue.

I suppose reinstalling Photoshop CS6 is an option, as soon as I figure out how as I bought it online with no disk. Also once one starts looking around this machine... one realizes just how much "junk" is left from other OS's etc. Empty folders, old apps you name it. I think a way to clean it up other than a complete reinstall would be a good thing but I don't know of a way to do that either or if one even should.

I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean by a universal problem? duh! Just from searching Google it seems to be a common issue... ?

In /Library/ColorSync/Profiles there is an Alias called Profiles that leads to Adobe/Color/Profiles, where the "bad" ones are but they are the only ones there.

Just a thought... what happens if you run the verify function in ColorSync... do you get the errors on those files too? It shows there but running the repair function doesn't repair them.

I dunno... so I've taken the 4 "guilty" profiles... archived them and then deleted them. I left the archive in the folder... ran ColorSync and there are no problems. I hope that does it... I'll try El Capitan again with fingers crossed.
