OS X El Capitan

I just visited my bank online and noticed something I hadn't seen before.

The bank shows the computer information I'm using in the side bar. But it recognizes my laptop currently running OS X El Capitan as
OS: OS X PUMA
PLATFORM: MACOSX

Is that the name that devolopers use?

Puma was OS 10.0. Somebody at the bank is a tad behind the times.

Actually Puma was 10.1, released September 25, 2001. A mere 15 years ago. Good grief. tongue.gif

So Bruce - try logging into your bank using a different browser (I'd suggest Chrome - unless that's what you were using, of course) and see what it says. I'm wondering if it's some glitch in the browser. If it IDs the OS incorrectly in two different browsers, I'd suggest you let the bank know. There is something off on their end. It may have no effect on anything, but you also don't want to find yourself locked out some day because according to the bank you're not running a sufficiently secure browser/OS. wink.gif

I think I will contact the bank about this. I was using Safari 10 (as I am now). I logged in using Firefox and got the same results.

I tend to confuse Puma and Cheetah. 10.0 was Cheetah.

As long as it recognizes the version of your browser, you should be good to go. Browsers normally identify themselves with every request (a browser token/string), as well as the Rendering engine (another token/string) the browser uses (Safari = Webkit, Mozilla = Gecko, etc.). Those are the important items as the computer hardware and encryption capabilities are dependent on those. The OS is also dependent on the hardware, of course, but if the machine doesn't have the cuorrent (modern) hardware, it won't be able to run the code for the most modern/secure browser software. I suspect the bank is, as Paddy said, way out of date in interpreting the 'OS code', if the browser is even sending it. Perhaps they should stick to handling money rather than trying to determine what hardware/OS you're using. wallbash.gif rolleyes.gif
