What software???

When I brought the computer out of sleep today there was a message that the computer had to restart to finish installing some software. But it did not say what software... I thought it might on restart but it didn't... so how should I know what got installed?

I can't find the software update log which used to be in Console anymore.

Launch App Store and click Updates. That should give you a list of software installed in the last 30 days, assuming that it came from App Store. Also, look at the App Store preference pane in System Preferences. Do you have it set to automatically download and install updates? That could account for this behavior.

I can get a list of purchased software however I can't find a list of system updates like one used to be able to. The only thing I can find that I give permission for automatic updates in the System Preferences is Adobe Flash Player because I've been fooled a couple of times with shady folks trying to pass off adware claiming to be a Flash update. I checked the internet plug-in date on that and it was updated yesterday so perhaps that is it. I just really don't care for the cryptic... "some software needs to restart to finish installation." Why not say what darn software? Oh well just another one of those  wallbash.gif I guess. I couldn't see a choice to tell it to go away so it would have to try again when I was here or to get it to tell you what is was.

Check to see if you are now running OS 10.12.1

Is that an update to El Capitan? I'm still running the 10.11.6 version of El Cap that I upgraded to from 10.8.5.
I'm afraid it's still a mystery and Console is of no help... just confusing. Used to be able to find the system updates in there too.

That's an update to Sierra, and Sierra is never downloaded automatically nor installed automatically. Only updates to your current OS can do that (if you so specify in System Preferences).

Sure...
Also... Flash Player now has a panel in the system preferences and I see that it "requests" quite a lot of access... better to clean it out often and block sites not known at all? Which is really most of them...  wallbash.gif

I removed your image since it displayed your email address, in two places. You can edit your copy (hiding your addy) and repost it if you like. It's not required, however. It looks a lot like mine. I do allow the OS to update System data and security files.

For info to others, the dialog showed only one checkbox ticked: "Automatically check for updates" Since it does that checking, it will also send a Notification telling you if it has found an update. You may have accidentally clicked the wrong button in the notification. It's very (too?) easy to do that.

There will always be a Flash Player item in the System Prefs, as long as you don't uninstall everything. There is also a tab you might check called "Updates". The default setting (by Adobe, of course) is to 'Allow Adobe to install updates'. Just another area to un-check, IMHO.

Thanks so much for catching that! I'll attach a copy with that info removed.
I opted to let the system install Flash updates as I thought just maybe "perhaps" it would be less likely to fall for a phony version of Flash update... maybe not? I don't know.

As it is I googled for Flash update and found: things like this:

So there was a legit update which I have now. Flash player is kinda a love/hate thing... there's a fair bit of content you can't get w/o it and yet the thing is riddled with bugs! IMO.

You had said that the computer had to restart to complete the installation. Flash does not require a restart, so whatever it was, it wasn't Flash.
