Keynote/PPT Slide presentation(s)
« on: October 31, 2016, 02:14:33 PM »
Scenario: SWMBO has been traveling the USA for several years  with her handy dandy MBP,  and LCD projector, giving PPT presentations (265 slides latest) created in Office 2008. She not so long ago attended a meeting where the presenter was using an iPad (versions etc unknown) and since our household has in its possessions an iPad 2 and a refurbed iPad mini she thought "what the heck" she should be able to lighten her travel load a bit by using one of those devices.THEREFORE assigned me the task of "making it so". Thinking.gif

Converting the PPT file to Keynote on the MBP went flawlessly, however I have come to the conclusion that  that both of the aforementioned IOS devices are "over the hill". They max out at IOS 9.3.5. After several hours of head scratching, trial and error I discovered ( I think) that it takes IOS 10 to run a Keynote presentation  that has been downloaded to the device itself. The reading states that one could run the presentation using Office which would require the Subscription to MS. No Thanks. I seem to be able to run the presentation on the Mini by putting it on "iCloud drive" but it is very "clunky"  wallbash.gif  and since she could never really depend on the quality of a WI-FI in the places where she does these things that is not acceptable. unsure.gif

Any one have any enlightenment they would care to share??? blink.gif  because I am afraid the next "REQUEST" will involve new something or another and more bucks.  We currently could almost qualify as an "Apple storehouse for old stuff"

Maybe you could have an Apple Museum and charge a small fee?!

I've avoided using the new iWorks apps after they were crippled, so I don't have any experience to offer. I suppose a new iPad would be sufficient but I would have recommended a 'real' computer, in the past. Alas, I'm not sure even makes a reasonably priced laptop with anything more than a USB port. OTOH that's not even on any iDevice without an adaptor. Frankly, I bet you have a better grasp of what's available/suitable than I do. Have you looked at the 'super' iPad Air?

I wouldn't worry about the lack of USB 2.0/3.0 etc. ports on the new MBPs. There are plenty of USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 cables out there for very little money - so why all the whining and wailing from the tech press? Seriously? If someone is willing to spend $2500 on a new laptop, methinks the $22 for these and maybe a USB-C to Lightning (I've seen those for $6.99) should do the trick. There are also USB-C to mini and micro USB...You certainly DON'T need to buy a bunch of silly overpriced adapters - just get the cheaper cables (which you're going to have to carry anyway) and carry on.

Anyway - back to the question at hand.

Did you see this, Daryl?

From everything I've read, running a Keynote presentation from an iPad 2 running 9.3.5 should work just fine. (I can find threads from people complaining about various things with Keynote presentations and that iOS etc., but nothing about them not working at all)

Paddy:  Yeah  those are the directions I followed and appeared to be successful   in getting the presentation downloaded to the mini but it would not launch Keynote until I fired up iClouddrive.  I subsequently found that I had both the original iWork 9 and the upgrades residing on the MBP, so I may have been mixing and matching. She is on the aeroplane in the mourning so I will have some time to work on it this week. Glad to hear it is SUPPOSE to work.

No experience with any of the iWork apps but I now have upgraded all of them in spite of the not so enthusiastic  input here at TS.

If you double-click a Pages/Numbers/Keynote document, it will auto-frustratingly open it in the new version. The only way I've found to prevent this is to only use a drag-the-document-to-the-old-version method. <rant>I blame this on Apple for destroying the old system of Type/Creator/etc. meta data that caused trouble ONLY for Windows users. How is that Apple's problem? rant.gif That behavior never seemed to bother MS. rolleyes.gif

New documents (and not just iWorks) simply use nothing but the file name suffix. And, since they did not change that (even as Microsoft did when it moved to new versions rolleyes.gif ), the new apps grab and modify the old files, often deleting/dropping any past feature that did not migrate to the "new" versions". But joy of joys, we can now present our crippled presentations on crippled devices... for a small additional fee. </rant>

WELLLLL Looks like it DOES work with ios 9.3.5.  I removed all of the old iWork9 apps on the mini. Going with the updated version of Keynote, Down loaded the presentation via iTunes, turned off iCloud drive and have been able to launch it on the mini. Now I just have to learn how to use it.  It is somewhat different than running it with PPT on the MBP. "Progress is our most important product" said some kindred soul.

Purchased the VGA to Lightning adapter and have spent a few hours with the presentation, hooked up the iPad mini to an external monitor, (she has the lcd projector with her) and it works just fine.  In fact it works so well I think she may be able to leave the MBP at home from now on. The reading material indicates that she can control the presentation with her iPhone 6.(to be determined) so maybe she  wont have to buy/depend on a bluetooth presenter pointer.  Also found a great deal on an iPad 4th Gen on Ebay which supports IOS 10, giving her at least 2 options. Mac Mini IOS 9.3.5 or the new iPad IOS 10.1. If the MBP.s don't expire from old age (likewise for their owners) it appears she be set for a while, at least for as long as she keeps doing her thing.

May she continue until she chooses to stop! OTOH, you should mind your manners and always defer to her judgement in matters of even a smidgen of importance! yes.gif scram.gif
