Unless you enjoy wading through upsell window after upsell window just to renew your hosting, and want to pay extra for email, I wouldn't ever suggest GoDaddy. I have one client there - only because they (idiotically) signed up for TEN *&^% years of hosting! GoDaddy originally supported SOPA and it wasn't until people started leaving in droves because of that, that they changed gears.
I've had good experiences with NameCheap and as I note, InMotion and Siteground are also highly regarded. You may pay a few dollars more a month with the latter two, but it's likely worth it.
A few more to consider (all recommended in the forums at WebHostingTalk, which is one of the only places I go for *real* web hosting discussions/reviews):
HostwithLove
MightWeb
MDD Hosting
CrocWeb
StableHost
Avoid ANYONE owned by EIG - as per Jim's links and
http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/bl...onal-group-eig/As for scamming - no, EIG are a huge multi-national company who gobble up good web hosts and turn them into bad web hosts through what I can only assume are cost-cutting measures and hiring lousy tech support people (likely at lower salaries...). An example - ASO used to have a good forum where you could go and discuss issues, find out about things that were going wrong etc. EIG eliminated it - just like they did with the Hostgator forums a number of years prior.

The concept was to roll up small ISPs into one large national ISP and achieve economies of scale. Endurance is acquiring hosting companies domestically and internationally.
