Firefox 52 to ban all plug-ins but Flash Player.
« on: March 09, 2017, 09:17:29 AM »
QUOTE
Mozilla today updated Firefox to version 52, which warns users when they put passwords into non-encrypted websites, bars all plug-ins other than Adobe's Flash Player and adds support for an under-consideration technology standard that claims to run web apps at nearly the same speed as native code.

Firefox 52 also patched 28 security vulnerabilities, a half dozen of them tagged with the "Critical" label. On another security front, the browser now pops up a warning message when users start to type in a password into a page not secured -- and encrypted -- with HTTPS.

I'm not keeping secret that I prefer Firefox over Chrome and hate Safari; not sure whether Firefox version 52 will convert anyone but barring all plug-ins but "Flash Player" is an interesting choice after everyone has spent the last three years or more trashing Flash Player!  What does anyone else think?

Surely that "bars all plug-ins other than" is a typo, Maybe from the same guy who used to work at AWS IT department? laughhard.gif OTOH, it may be very difficult for Mozilla to 'police' plug-ins and this is their attempt to control things. If I did use FF, and they blocked 1Password, I'd simply stop using that browser for good. I can't imagine surfing without 1PW! 1PW may have a different method for use with FF, however. dntknw.gif

One of the reasons I have used Chrome, occasionally, is that it supposedly sand-boxes Flash. Hardly ever use FF, but hanks for he info. thumbup.gif

I just replaced it on the machine here at work and I still get into TS just fine using the method Firefox used to keep my login password.  I'll try the other places (Facebook, whatever) to see whether all that works!

Not sure what you mean by "the method FF used to keep" your password. If you're talking about 1Password, that's great. If your talking about the browser storage of passwords, that's completely different. I never use any browser's password or bookmark storage functions.

I rarely use FF but it entered my ID and password for my local library account as usual, even after updating to FF 52.

I use browser based for passwords that are for things that aren't very critical.  The only one's that are I never save passwords for in the first place.

Wow, was I sleeping when I wrote the above?  There are a number of non-critical passwords that I don't mind the browser saving; the important one's
I keep in my head!

I think there is some confusion here between plugins, extensions and Firefox Add-ons (which still work). It's not a very informative article, as these things go. For more info:

https://support.mozilla.org/t5/Problems-wit...s-no/ta-p/31069

I have three plugins installed in FF v53 which are still very much operational: OpenH264 Video Codec provided by Cisco, Shockwave Flash, and Widevine Content Decription Module supplied by Google. (the last one allows Chrome to play DRM-protected HTML5 video and audio, like you'd find on Netflix.)

And for a discussion on the differences between add-ons, extensions and plugins, with lots of links: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2041261...-firefox-add-on

For the record, all the extensions I use (I'd be LOST without Firebug for web development!) are ticking along nicely. smile.gif And that includes our friend 1Password.

I agree. People are saying they are entering passwords, etc. but not how. It would be amazing, indeed, if FF killed thier own password manager. What I'm trying to find out is does this affect 1Password. I couldn't care less about the internal functions of the browser. tongue.gif wink.gif I think we would have heard a little noise and screaming from AgileBits if their function was blocked. laughhard.gif

I just signed into TS using 1 Password. Also signed into a spam protection site associated with my business email. No problems. While using Firefox 52.

FF 52 is working fine for me and so is 1Password.

In Add-ons, FF52 keeps the Extensions but eliminates most of the Plug-ins.

I also have the plug-ins Paddy mentioned.
