I have the privilege of driving some cancer patients to their appointments. Recently, I had a patient who is also blind. I soon realized she was using her mobile phone (not sure of the brand) to do what that video demonstrated. I was not only amazed at her perseverance in just 'getting through life" but in the technology that was obviously so helpful! While this vid mentioned several apps, I am still surprised at how few of us even look at the "Accessibility" functions we have at our fingertips, both on the desktop and the mobile side. Just looking at what is available might help us remember how blessed most of us are in the realm of our physical abilities. If you get a chance, find a place you can volunteer yours to those without.
An
amusing and
instructive aside:
When I called to confirm that I would be driving for this blind lady, I asked what she might be wearing so I could identify her in the public area she would be waiting. Amusingly, she said she rarely thinks about what she might wear each day. It was
amusing because I often relate that practically my whole working life I wore a uniform. My only decision upon going to work, was a choice of underwear! And even that was a limited choice of color (
always white in the Air Force
)!!
The
"instructive" part of this story is that how
I interpreted her comment that she would be wearing a "black and white" coat. I imagined black and white blocks/dots/stripes/areas/etc. What she wore
did have black and white
threads! Perfectly logical to her! Probably "black and white" is just what she was told if she happened to ask for a description or what she had requested when shopping!
