HELP! I Think I Wiped Out My HD
« on: July 27, 2003, 08:00:26 PM »
Somebody Please Help Me!
I will be offline unless I can get my Internet Up and running before midnight.  I am running WebTV/MSN TV for email right now and Cox HSI on the Mac.  My Mac is off line right now.

This is what I did:
I was trying to do an install of Flash Media Player but I kept getting a message that the application program couldn't be found.  I went into Quicktime but was told that it was disabled.  I went into my Control Panels and everything was turned to off.  I read the directions for how to turn everything on.  (up until this point everything was turned on and working just fine)  I unchecked all the boxes thinking that this was the way to check the "On" buttons, and then it told me to Restart the Mac.  I Restarted.  Now my Control Panel Menu is gone, Internet Exploreer and Outlook Express is missing.  When I click on the Internet Browser listing it tells me that  the thing can't be found.
When I went to the Internet information, all my information is still there.  The Icons on my Desktop can't be clicked on.  What can I do to Restore everything to the way it was?  Can I do a Restore on the Mac?

Myrna. Were you in the Extension Manager Control Panel? smile.gif

Sounds like it.

A quick fix.

Open up your Hard drive Icon.

Then open up your System Folder Icon.

There open up your Control Panel Icon.

Below it. Open up Control Panels (Disabled).

Everything you turned off should be in there.

Drag with your mouse the Control Panels from Disabled to regular Control Panels.

Restart your computer.

Do you follow this?

Evening kelly,
I want to be certain that I am not messing things up again.  Did I understand you correctly when you said to drag the Control Panels disabled over to the Apple Menu Control Panel or did you mean the System folder listing Control Panel?
Do I drop it onto the Control Panel and release there?  Do I need to make another duplicate for my System Folder?

Move Control Panels that you're missing from the

Control Panels Disabled Folder to the Control Panels Folder.

Another way, if you haven't turned it off,

Go to Apple Menu  > Control Panels > Extension Manager.

Launch Extension Manager and Re-Check those items to turn them on.

Different way of doing the same thing.

Look up Extension Manager in one of your mac Books. smile.gif

wink.gif Hello From Sunny Rhode Island, kelly, your "the man",

It took getting online to get me to become a "garbage

picker!"LOL.

Well, after being up twenty one hours from yesterday

morning until early this AM, I finally got the System to

work.  I used the information you gave me from your last
 post.

It was not a fun day for me, though it started out to be.

I nearly went into shock, when I saw that everything
was giving me "could not be found" alerts.

Thank Heaven.

I made another System Folder Alias and put it on my desktop.  I am not sure if this will change if I use my original and mess it up somehow, but it is there.  I made a copy of each of my OE and IE and Cox HSI information and put them into folders on my desktop.

I called and uncancelled both my WebTV/MSN ISP service and the extra telephone line that I used for its connection late last night and early this morning.  I came to the conclusion that, since I don't have the knowledge as yet, to overcome these problems, albeit, self inflicted, that I should probably run both services for the next month.  As it is, I am getting worn out from trying to "fix" all the messes I create.  This learn as I go and flying by the seat of my pants, is very time consuming.

I am really so very grateful that TS is here for me when I lose my way and don't know what to do.

I think I had better wait a while longer to learn how to try to install a media player.

I really need to get some rest for a while today, as I have two medical appointments scheduled and I look and feel like ....

Today is a brand new day and "The Adventures of Mrs Lop in Macland" can continue, later on.

Thanks for your patience and your help.
Myrna

You're more than welcome Mrs. L. Get some rest if you can. smile.gif

I agree. Keep both for a while.

I started out just like you. Didn't know anything.

David Pogue's Macs for Dummies book helped me the most.

If you haven't been given it. Check your Library. It's pretty common.

You do understand that an "Alias" is just a Road Sign to the real thing?

Good luck. smile.gif

clap.gif Evening kelly,

My new doctor thought that I was "spaced out" when I saw her

yesterday.

I am going to try to get the Pogue's since popular opinion on

TS think it's a must have.

clap.gif On the upside, tomorrow is my last Radiation Treatment!

My new doctor thinks that I will need at least a month to regain

some of my strength and energy back.

I hope that it is sooner than that.

I will be reading the Mac Bible in the interim.

Thanks again for the encouragement and support.

God Bless,
Myrna
