Losing hard drive available space?
« on: July 28, 2003, 06:27:19 PM »
I've been burning CD-Rs on and off for the last few days by all sorts of methods through toast in Jag.

I've noticed that the HD/partition is losing (was) available space afterwards.
I think I've pinned it down to when a burn is completed using either the data mode or the create temporary partition mode and the dialog comes up asking if you want to save. Well I do the don't save because I'm done. Never had any problems in the past.

Reason why I'm thinking it's this road is because the numbers on the burns and what I'm losing come close to adding up as the same.

Perhaps it 'is' saving when I'm saying don't.?.

I've done a 'find' but can't find anything [even invisible] and manually looked around.
Have a general idea where to look yet I've no idea what I'm looking for.?.

The two main culprits would be toast and iTunes.

Oh yeah. Ran all the utility/hard drive checkers and rebuilt Jags desktop.
This box is singing with all players in there right positions.
Except I got a leak. <gr>
Haven't zapped pram yet.

If you create a temporary partition, you are creating a disk image file. if you make a temporary partition that is, say, 300 megabytes, you have a 300 megabyte image file sitting on your hard drive.

When you are done, Toast asks you if you want to save or not. It is not asking if you want to save the temporary partition. it is just asking if you want to save a list of files you burned to CD.

You always save the temporary partition when you make one. If you want that hard disk space back, you must manually go and delete the disk image file.

Hey! I found them!
Combined a little less than 9gigs.
Just about the same as I lost.
They were in my 'documents folder'.Strange. Know I looked there before.?.
Saved them on another partition (just in case) and dumped the originals.
My disk space is back up there. biggrin.gif
Dumped the saved ones.
Kool! Thanks again Tacit. smile.gif

It's pizza time. See me. <gr>

Just to double check, I burnt a cd-r in the temporary partition/disk image mode.

Sure enough afterwards the disk image was in the documents folder.
Tossed it and back up goes my drive space.

Can you imagine having a much smaller partition or HD and watching all those gigs going bye bye. biggrin.gif
