As of last night, I cannot send out any email from Gmail, using Safari. I have Safari 9.1.2 and have OS X El Capitan, 10.11.6.

From what I can tell, and I really don't have any idea about what I'm talking about or what this really means in terms of sending Gmail with Safari as my browser, I see that I do have a Security Update 2018-001 for 10.11.6.

Here is the screen shot for the Security Update thingy.

Gmail seems to work fine with Firefox. I'm very used to Safari though, and would like to continue using Safari... if possible.

Thanks!!!!!

Sooz

My wife's MBP uses 10.11.6 but not Gmail. I suspect it is the Security Update which patched security holes in Safari. I do have problems with a one specific site not displaying anything in Opera, Firefox and Safari. I think all browsers (and maybe Apple Mail) are starting to monitor/block non-secure sites in various ways.

I saw this exact thing in one of our iMAC's today; my solution was to use Chrome (we're a Googled school district) so I just had her log onto Gmail with that.  Might not be everyone's cup of tea! :D

Sooz, I suspect the problem is that you are behind in updates. I'm running El Cap: 10.11.4 and Safari is 11.1. Today there is 10.13.5, which I've not yet installed. I'd recommend upgrading, as I've had no issues with anything, and I use gmail in the Safari browser every day.

 Never mind my comments. I'm not running El Cap, I'm running High Sierra.  I don't have an answer to your problem. Sorry.

In the dark recesses of my memory, I seem to think many folks just use a web browser to read their Gmail. Google seems to take lessons from Abode and M$: "Do thing our way! We know best!" And in Google's case, they have the data on you to prove it!

 What you got is right there in yore sig! :wallbash:

And sometimes, Google is your friend. ;)

Seems this was an issue in January as well: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/gmail/lkurSrVGpEg

Not sure what is happening now, but I AM sure that you should do the security updates that Apple is offering, Sooz. You may not want (or be able) to update your OS, but the version of Safari you should be running on El Cap is 11.1 - not 9.1.2, which is from two years ago now. Security updates are usually a good thing.

Safari versions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safari_version_history - and there is a link from the OS version to its own Wikipedia page which lists all the security updates. I think you're missing rather a lot of them if Safari is only at 9.1.2.

Doing this may cure the Gmail problems - and I don't think there is any harm in trying. Do make sure you have a complete backup before doing anything though - that's just good practice. :)

Thanks, everyone, for the input and help and links, too!  I've tried Chrome before on a friend's computer and did not really like it at all.

Let me see if I have this correct:
I am running Safari 9.1.2 & should be running a different one? (I'll go check it out that link, Paddy!)
I have OS X El Capitan, 10.11.6 and should be running OS X El Capitan 11.1, yes?
I have Security Update 2018-001 but should have Security Update 2018-003, yes?

The Latest:  I logged into Gmail a few minutes ago and I got an option of Switch To Standard View(which does not permit me to send email) or Set basic HTML as default view   I picked Set basic HTML as default view and it works and I can send emails now.    Hooray?  Maybe?

So if it's working now, can I just sit with it a bit or do I have to upgrade my El Capitan and Safari?

... oh, and I have no idea if this matters, but sometimes I see that Gmail has a letter "G" with red, yellow, green, blue inside the letter, and other times, mail is just a thin red capital "M."  I think the thin red capital "M" means Mail for Gmail, yes, or is it Google Mail and if so, how did that happen?

All this time --before this issue in my original post above -- and Gmail just magically opened for me. I don't even recall having to make a choice of which version of Gmail I wanted to use!

Before updating anything, make a cloned backup. That's what Carbon Copy Cloner is doing automatically, if you have it running automatically (you have set it to run on a schedule). You can also do this with Superduper, of course. Plus, I hope you are also using Time Machine.

Yes, you should be using the latest one that will run with El Capitan. That is Safari 11.1.

Yes, you should always install the newest Security Update for whatever OS you happen to have.

No. The number after an application (or operating system) name indicate its "age". "El Capitan" started as 10.11. (it was the tenth major chage to OS X 10) Later, it was updated to 10.11.1. Eventually, it was updated to 10.11.6. The "10" part has not changed since OS X was invented. The second number (11), changes with every major update along with the name (first there were cats: Jaguar, Leopard, Lion, etc., lately it's mountains in California; Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra, etc.). The last number indicates how many times the OS X 10.xx has been updated; OS 10.11 (El Capitan) ended up with 6 updates, so its last, newest version is 10.11.6.

If Gmail works for you, great. Google likes to change colors everyday, sometimes. The changes are purely for aesthetics, Gmail is Gmail however it's spelled or colored. I don't have a gmail account so I can't tell you exactly what the url says, perhaps another member will enlighten us.

The question is: How were you accessing gmail? You can use your Mail.app to access email from any email account you have. I thought that was how you were doing it. If that is true, Mail would automatically show you your gmail messages just like any other email accounts you might have when you started up Mail.

I suggested using Safari (a web browser), since many found Mail had problems with gmail. There is only one "gmail", it is simply an email account. How you view/read/send/store gmail messages depends on what application you use.

Hope that helps.

I cant access Gmail on my older Mac any more, says 'wrong password' but its the correct one, as I have it written down. And I can use Gmail on my iPhone just fine. Using the same password of course. Weird, I cant seem to fix it, but probably its more useful on my phone anyway.

WHAT? How is that erer pruf, much less safe. I'll wager that what you are using on your mobile devices is not the same as on the desktop. :p I would hope that you can view what that password actually is on your password manager. You are using a password manager, right!

Are you using Autofill to enter your password on the older Mac? If so, check to see if the password is correct. At least in my version of Safari, you would go to Safari > Preferences > Passwords and enter your administrator password at the prompt (then, press Return). You can then find your gmail account and select it. Your password should then become visible.

Jane, what OS are you running on this older Mac? What version of Safari are you using? As stated throughout this thread, the older OS's and versions of Safari do not work with gmail (and other sites).

Hooray, I think!

I had my SuperDuper! and my Time Machine as backup (although, really, if something happened to my iMac I would have no clue whatsoever as to how to use them to restore my iMac/desktop!). I used to have CCC from way back 2013 maybe? but I don't have it now.

Anyway, I downloaded the latest version of Safari 11.1.1 and it seems to be working with my El Capitan... I went to my gmail account and actually was able to send mail, instead of it getting stuck doing nothing when I clicked the send button.

Gosh, I hope I'm good to go now! If not, you know I'll be back!

Thanks everyone!!!!!! :thanx:

Sooz, please go to your profile settings and enter some OS info in the "Personal Text" field. Better yet enter more hardware, OS information a little lower on that page in the "Signature:" field. :thanx:

Jim, you're right!  I'll put down as much as I know -- if you remember the last time I did this, it was waaaaay back when I was Member #32 on this site!!!  I'm sure I'll miss a lot of stuff, so I may need explicit instructions of what more to include, and where to find the info.
