I'm running 10.11.6 and applied a Security update today. After the iMac shut down and was restarting a loud noise, like a beep, that lasted a couple of seconds
came out of the speakers. Then it took a while to boot up, which it finally did. Anyone know what that extemporaneous sound is?

BTW, I like the new boards.

That's fairly normal to have the beep, usually in conjunction with a bar filling across the screen!

Thanks gunug, I don't remember it sounding off like that before. It was like a horn or something. It woke me up though.

It is normal that it takes longer to boot up after a security update or OS update. Subsequent boots should be as usual.

Likely a boot ROM update. No worries - a bit startling, is all.

I've heard it a few times, and it sure is startling. Didn't hear it the next time I rebooted. Like Paddy said, no worries. Glad you like the new boards. :)
