Change those Menus!
« on: November 28, 2018, 10:37:13 AM »
Just a reminder that we can usually change or add menu items keyboard shortcuts very easily. How many times have I heard complaints about the change (several OS versions ago) of the "Save As..." menu to "Duplicate"? Maybe not as often now, even old dogs can learn new tricks given enough time and patience.

The Cocktail devs always include some "Tips & Tricks" with their update emails. I got one today and was reminded of two facts.
1. I had still not updated Cocktail to the Mojave macOS 10.14 version.
2. Why had I not added "Save As..." back to any app's File menu?! :wallbash:

Although I don't need or use the "Duplicate" item that often, I am still being asked what it does and "What happened to the Save As... menu". So I immediately opened a Sharing window for my wife's MBP and added that menu back to her File menu items. While I was at it, I rectified that oversight on my own iMac... :whistling:

As a reminder to those who have not done this:
  • Open System Prefs and select "Keyboard" choosing the "Shortcuts" tab
  • Select "App Shortcuts" in the left-hand list
  • Select "All Applications" in the right-hand list
  • Click the "+" button just below that area.
  • Type the exact name of the menu item: Save As... in the "Menu Title" text box
  • In the "Keyboard Shortcut" text box, press and hold the "command", "shift" and "S" keys*
  • Click the "Add" button
You can now see "Save As..." in the File menu of any app that offers the ability to save a file.
*You can choose almost any key combination you want however command-shift-S was the shortcut in previous versions of the OS.

Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

Thanks for the reminder on this - I'd forgotten about it. Most of the apps I use do have "Save as" but it's nice to have it back in the Apple apps without having to use modifier keys, not that I use the affected Apple apps much... ;)
