Synching photos on 3 devices not working... somewhat!
« on: December 26, 2018, 10:15:41 PM »
Earlier this year I posted that my iPhone was not synching photos to one of my 2 Mac devices properly. I couldn’t find a solution.
Now I’m asking again, cause here’s a bit of an update that might help. Hope someone can make sense of all this…

My iPhone 8 photos synch totally and always with my MBP like they should.

In January, 2018 they stopped syncing to my 24" iMAC when I went on a holiday.
(Not sure if this happened from some setting I changed on my iPhone. And I’m still not sure if this is an iCloud issue or not.)
In June my photos started synching again until September when that stopped. :-(

Here is the info on the devices…

—- iPHONE 8:
iOS 12.1
Qty: 16,847
When I go to "My Albums”, it shows under “All Photos” - 17,399
Q. Why is there a difference in quantity?

—- MB PRO. MacOSX10.11.6.
Photos v1.5
Bottom of window - “16,881 Photos. Updated just now”

—- 24” iMAC:
iMac OSX10.10.5
Photos 1.0.1
The text at the bottom of the Photos window shows -
 “16,546 Photos. Uploading 1,322 items”
Q. Where are those photos that might be uploading?

FYI: In my System Prefs /iCloud/Photos - I’ve got all 3 boxes checked -
Photo Library, Photo Stream, Photo Sharing.

In my System Prefs /iCloud/Manage Storage/Photo Library -
“16,847 photos stored in iCloud”.
There’s a discrepancy in the number of photos.

In Photos/Preferences/iCloud Photo Library -  “Download Originals” is checked.

Q. What can I do to make ALL my iPHONE photos sync with my iMAC?

BEST OF THE SEASON TO ALL TS FOLKS!

Do I post this question on apple.com support to get some advice or anywhere else?

Sounds like a plan. It may be a problem with three different OS and three different hardware and software combinations that no one else here has. More likely to find any who have similar problems in that much larger group. ;)

Raven I've never had this issue and had no suggestions for you to try. However, I just googled iphone 8 not syncing photos and found this:

Link removed as it's not what I saw yesterday.

Be extremely careful before downloading anything from that easeUS site. I am very leery of any site that offers complicated advice and then offers "free software". :blueeek: Actually, I am leery of any site offering self-recommended free software. :coolio: Use at your own risk. Always make bootable backs first.

Sorry, that's not what I visited yesterday. I've removed the link entirely.

If you can check your Safari History, it should show all the sites you visited yesterday as well as a few days prior. If there is a helpful site, please post it. ;)

I plan on deleting my post unless that might cause more confusion.

A few ideas in this thread:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8312111

Also, sometimes signing in and out of iCloud (on all devices) works wonders.

I'm afraid I have very little first hand experience with Photos/sharing via iCloud, because (1)I have waaaay too many photos to try that (60-70,000) and (2) I loathe Apple's storage system. I'm still using Lightroom at the moment, with the photos all stored on external drives so I can use the LR library with either the iMac or the MBP, but will likely switch to a non-Adobe DAM/Raw editor soon - or at least before LR 6 ceases to work well. I refuse to pay a monthly fee to use software. There are more and more alternatives out there - I've got a couple already to try out.

Strange part is that all my devices have been synching photos for years until late 2017. And then on and off again in 2018. Last year I went from an iPhone 6 to 8.

Apple Support suggested I upgrade my older OSX on my iMac. That's a separate issue I will ask on another post herein.

I suspect that the synching issue is related to the out of date Mac OS. As I noted in the other thread, you're somewhat limited now with updates because of your hardware - so whether 10.11 will fix things or not when you're using the latest iOS on the phone is debatable.
