OS 10.6.8 secure browser
« on: December 29, 2018, 12:46:56 PM »
I am looking for a secure browser for my 10 year old iMac running 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).  I know that the browsers I have namely Safari, Chrome, and Firefox are no longer supported. I am not happy that I would need to rectify this with the purchase of a new Mac as this one just runs fine and I would really like to keep it.  Is there a solution such an app or add-on and if so please let me know.
Hmmmmm. I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I'm not sure that what you heard is what I actually meant!

Remaining on 10.6 is fine as long as you understand not many developers (including Apple) are supporting it.

It would be great if you would update your Profile to include your hardware (and OS) info in a signature field. It will appear on every post you make so we won't have to ask you:

what hardware you are using. :) :dntknw:

Here are some links to people asking your question using your OS:

The short answer is that there are no secure up-to-date browsers for that OS. The best you can do is follow the advice here:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8384240

and here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8316286

Obviously, you are exposing yourself to some risk (not as bad as using Windows XP online, mind you!) and you may run into issues with sites such as those of banks or the CRA etc. which will not let you log in from old browsers. I know it may irk you to have to update for this reason, but if you value the convenience of doing things online (safely) then it is worth considering. You don't have to spend the big bucks to get the latest and greatest either - there are lots of machines out there in the 3-4 year old age range that would keep you going and up to date for quite a while. Heck, even an up-to-date iPad would be more useful for online banking/browsing etc. at this point. ;)

I had thought I read something about an updated version of Opera that would run on the older mac OS's but I'm not finding the reference now!  We had some questions about this from people who had bought older iMAC's from our auction.  My solution on my G5 tower is to run Linux!  I don't do much with it except run music play lists from it in my bedroom!

Thanks for the replies. I am using my 5th generation iPad to do my banking now. Plan to buy a refurnished iMac in February after returning from Cuba.

If the refurbished Mac comes from Apple, be aware that it will probably have the OS updated to the latest version of the Mac OS installed. The info should be visible on the order or information page. You may then need to further update some of your current apps, but you can check on which ones by using the RoaringApps before even ordering the new Mac.
