Enserting speling koreshuns
« on: March 08, 2019, 08:37:37 AM »
As long as we're using today for rants...

Can some one 'splain to me how to get Mojave to stop inserting spelling corrections at the beginning of the miss-spelt, highlighted (BTW) word?! :wallbash: It would even help if, when the "correct spelling" is inserted, the highlighted wurd was still selected! Then a simply 'delete' key would remove it.

Worse still, if your cursor is nearer the middle of the highlighted word, the "correction" will be inserted INSIDE the miss-spelt one!!!

Of course, this behavior is only seen about 85% of the time. It will randomly work as it should; replace the highlighted word with the correct one!

See the image below for what normally happens!  :no2:

Check your settings in System Preferences > Keyboard > Text.

Thanks, but exactly what setting in the Keyboard Pref should I set/change? I see nothing there except the "automatic" YES/NO setting, which depends on having the word already in the list of words to "Replace". And even that doesn't seem to work in this forum software. :coolio: Nor do I find anything of use via a web search, most of the hits seem to think I'm talking about Microsoft Word even when I include "Mac" in the search string.

I've searched every where to set where the insertion point should be. If I carefully move the cursor to one end or the other, that's where the correction is inserted. If I leave the cursor anywhere in the miss-spelt word, the insertion usually ends up exactly under the cursor, splitting the miss-spelled word but leaving those two parts on either side of the correction. ...unless I try to show that behavior! :wallbash:

If this really bugs you, uncheck "Correct spelling automatically" and perhaps the other two options that appear below it.

OK, I disabled the "Correct Automatically" and noted, unsurprisingly, a distinct lack of changes... Does your Mojave (iMac) (Bluetooth) Keyboard->Text panel show differently?! :dntknw:

BTW, a misspelled word does not change/correct when typed in this forum. It does show a dotted red underline in either setting, but nothing happens (automagically) until I select and control-click the misspelled wurd.

Next suggestion?

My Keyboard > Text panel is the same as yours. And, I also see a misspelled word underlined in red in any website that I visit and enter words. As with you, nothing happens unless I control-click the word or change it manually.

Does this substitute one annoyance for another?

I am not annoyed by the machine pointing out my misteaks, that is vary rare endeed! But when want to correct a mistake I want the incorrect spelling to be completely erased by the correction. Why would I want the incorrect spelling left visible, much less surrounded by parts of the correct spelling?! That “solution” is worse than the original problem and even causes more work!

How would you like stepping on the brake peddle and having your car accelerate rather than slow down... but only randomly? Most of the time it would actually slow to a stop. How about starting up your Mac and occasionally seeing it boot into Windows... 95?!

I am perfectly contented to have a procedure reported to me that will stop this occasional (but way too often) behavior stopped. I have simply not been able to document nor find that procedure. It is definitely not the way it worked before Mojave macOS 10.14, at least in my recollection and install of macOS 10.13 High Sierra.

The solution is simple: Just say "no" to mistakes. That's what I do. Once, I thought I made a mistake but I was wrong.  :yahoo:

Had to partially post #6 and add some input from another machine. Thanks, so much for your suggestion! I will let my wife know that I can no longer accept her reprimands.
I gotta go... I'm applying to a cooking school... :scram:

Just to be sure we (I, anyway) know what is annoying me. It is not the red dotted underlining.

What IS annoying:
#1: The "automatic" correction does not work as it does in iOS. In that system, the machine offers a correction and actually inserts it into the text unless one specifically disapproves it.

In Mac OS, all I see is the red dotted underline. If the misspelled word is already in the list of Replacements, the OS will insert it, whether I want it to or not. I was frustrated yesterday when trying to type a date: 3/3/4. Each time I typed the "¾" part, it replaced it with the fraction (just as it did now). I finally managed to force the OS to leave things alone by typing "3 / 4" (I added a 'space' on either side of the "/").

#2::
When I select a word that I either know (or think) is incorrectly spelled and control-click (right-click) it, the correct spelling may or may not replace the selection. Sometimes it does. Great!! But quite often, it simply sticks the correction at either end of the selection or even exactly under the location of the cursor thereby splitting the original word into two parts. DUH!! :whoosh: :wallbash: :nono: :envy: What is the point of that?!
