Try this site, Sooz: https://ocr.space

I just tried a PDF and a JPG with text and it OCR'd it perfectly both times - and the PDF was 20 pages long.

Another option - PDF OCR X Community Edition. It's free in the App Store. Just tried it on the jpg with text and it did a perfect job as well. You'll need to do PDFs one page at a time, but hey...it's free and works!

I have pro-level OCR software (Abbyy Finereader Sprint 8, which still works, PDF Pen Pro, Acrobat Pro...) as well - but the two freebie options work well.

I scanned a new page called "Sewing Club" and saved it as both "Sewing Club" which is how the scanner saved it, and I also saved a copy of it and named it "Sewing Club.jpg"
I suspect you have extensions hidden. You should not need to ever add a file extension to any file. Can you supply us with a screen shot of any part of a Finder window showing a list of files? see images below

Wow! After using the app just this morning, I clicked the Menu Bar icon after reading your post. Somehow the menu items for iText had changed to a list of three different web-based services, one of which was Google! Click the iText icon on your Menu Bar and tell me what the choices are.

If "Google" is one of them, we need to quit iText.

Hi, Paddy, and thanks so much for ringing in here with the link and other info!  I'll save that info in case I need to do this again, or when I get a chance, I'll check it out more thoroughly.

Jim, I'm not sure what you're asking about in terms of the Finder, so I've taken a screen shot of when I open the Finder (is this a window?).

I'm also including what I get when I open the Finder window --> Preferences --> Advanced...

... and when I open iText and click on More ---> Preferences.    :dntknw:

Er, Jim, if you read the description of iText OCR at the App store, it very clearly spells out that it uses Google to do the OCR-ing. Even this description, which isn't as clear on the subject, pretty much says it: https://en.toolinbox.net/iText/

Google OCR is actually pretty good - but I don't know that I'd want to use it for anything legal or personally identifiable. It's FABULOUS when you're travelling and trying to decipher menus or signs in languages other than your own - the Google Translate app on the phone has the option of using it in real time (as long as you have a cell/data connection, of course!). I used it quite a bit in Chile and Argentina on our trip last month.

Paddy! What?! You read the Manual?! We done need no stinkin' manual!!!! I'm not sure that detail is in the App Store panel that shows all the hits of a search. Anyway, I downloaded and installed at least 6 different apps and it was the easiest and simplest to use. And it actually opened/worked!

Zooz
Referring to the image entitled "Finder in top menu bar.png":

is this a window?
Nope. The clue is your own description, "in the top menu bar". Things in the "menu bar" are menus; a list of items that usually are actions you want an app to perform; Tell me "About Finder", open the "Preferences" for this app, "Empty" stuff in the "Trash", show me any "Services" that might be usable in this app, "Hide Finder", "Hide Others" apps. You will note that except where the word "Finder" appears in that menu, it could be referring to any application.

Generally, that "top menu bar" is simply referred to as "The Menu Bar". Windows often places a "menu bar" on every single window. So, in Windows, there is a "top" menu bar, but often umpteen additional menu bars. Apple did away with that even before with the Lisa.  :D

A "window" is a dedicated, delineated area on the screen on the screen where an app can display information or ask for input. A window usually has clearly visible sides and (usually) hides what is 'behind' it. A Finder "window" is what can show you a list of files, documents and apps installed on you drive(s). Those windows help you to "find" things on your drive(s). A "window" is not a menu.

Your second image is a window showing some of Finder's preferences. That window has the item that I suspected you had not checked: "Show all filename extensions". With it Unchecked, you will never see that all files have an extension on them. An extension is what tells the OS what app is assigned to open that file. It is a period followed (usually) by 3 letters. When the scanner created an image called "Sewing Club" it actually had an extension on it; Sewing Club.jpg. When you added ".jpg" to that name, you actually made the name "Sewing Club.jpg.jpg". That's one reason to check that box, it avoids confusing you and/or the computer and anyone you might send the file to.

The last image ("iText when I click to open it .png") is all I ever saw with iText until yesterday morning when it showed me a list of three different web names. I simply Quit iText and restarted it and got back the original menu offering opening a file or copying text from the screen. I suggest that you do the same and see if it will revert to the original menu as seen in an image below. The "Select Image File" is the item you should use.

A technical point: That image ("iText when I click to open it .png") is not what you see when you "click to open it", it is what you see when you additionally move the cursor over the item labeled "More".

We now know, thanks to Paddy, that iText actually uses the computing power owned by Google for the heavy lifting required by OCR. If you don't want to touch Google, I can understand. I suspect (because I have not read the details of all the apps I downloaded and trashed) that most of them, especially the free ones, also use Google or some of the other on-line services. I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader.

I do apologize for not reading the details about iText and exposing your texts to Google. I should have known if it sounds too good to be true...

The point is, OCR needs powerful computing power. You can buy a dedicated app or get that power from many apps that use the computers available at places like Google and Amazon... or you can type it all yourself. Either way, work has to be done.

Hi, Paddy and thanks for adding more info about Google OCR.  I never did select ok when the pop up window said my doc would be uploaded to the Google server.

Jim, Paddy doesn't have to read no stinking' manual, and we don't have to wear no stinking' badges!  LOL! I've read your recent response at least three times b/c you know how I am with computers!  Great explanations, and understanding happened in my brain! Thank you!

I did as you suggested:  Show all filename extensions -- Thanks!  As for iText, you and I didn't expose anything b/c I never followed through once I saw it was going to be uploaded to the Google server. No harm done.

The legal document has been typed--I'm really good at typing!   :)

BTW, here's something I've wanted to know... it seems that sometimes when I save a Word document, it will have a .doc at the end, and other times it will have a .docx at the end.  I have to admit I haven't tried to see if there is a pattern to it, i.e. if it's an attachment of the Roster from my church Women's Club, or if it's a document that originated with me.

Thanks again, so much, for the help and the handholding! It's appreciated more than either of you can know!!!

Oh, and I cannot seem to "quit" iText. It's still on my menu bar.  Is that a problem?

Smiles,
Sooz

.docx is the newer, more current document extension, based on XML. In any recent version of Word, you'd have to actually select ".doc" instead of .docx, which would be the default. If you're working on a document that someone else sent you that's the older .doc format, then it will remain that way unless you choose "save as" and change the extension to .docx. You can, of course, change Word's preferences (in the Output and Sharing->Save section) to save as ".doc" if you wish, though why anyone would do that now is beyond me - it's been 12 years now since the .docx extension became the default, with Word 2007.

Are you saying the last item in it's menu is not working? Look at your own image you posted back in thread #17. Your "iText when I click to open it .png" image shows the "Quit" menu if you hover over the "More" item. If it is truly not quitting with that please reply.

You should also make sure that it is not listed in your System Prefs->Users & Groups->Login Items.

Oh, Jim, sometimes it seems that the obvious escapes me!  Yes, I saw Quit and I quit it (quitted it?0. Thanks!

I checked to make sure that it is not listed in your System Prefs->Users & Groups->Login Items, and it was not.  Thank you again for your help! You've always been so patient with me!

Sounds good! Open a Finder window (Finder->command-N), select iText.app in your Applications and drag it to the Trash. Or you can use the Finder->File menu and click the "Move to Trash" item (command-delete). Please remember that putting something IN the trash is not the same as EMPTYing the trash. I assume you have at least one trash container in the house. But you still have to take that container to the garbage can or dumpster occasionally to empty the trash [can]. We do that on the Desktop by clicking the trash can icon. When you do that, Apple displays a window with a cleverly named button labeled "Empty". You don't even have to go out in the rain or touch that filthy garbage can! :eeew!: :laughhard: Probably designed by some youngsters whose parents never got them to perform that chore without some cajoling!

It is so easy to be patient when people respond quickly, answer questions asked and willingly perform needed tasks. :Look: :notworthy:

Thanks, Jim, for the specifics about how to trash iText.... it's done, trashed, deleted, trash emptied, etc!   As for home, yeah, trash day is Monday!  Thanks again for all your help, AND your sense of humor!!!!!

Here's what I made yesterday. It is creamier than it looks.  Spring lasted about 2 days, and now it seems we're in full-on Summer, with temps 85 to 90!

Well, if you're done with Spring, could you please, pretty please, pack it up and send it on over here? We're still stuck in not-quite-spring dreary, cold, rainy gloom. We're all very tired of it. The forecast for the next week is rain and mid-40s, pretty much, other than tomorrow (mid 40s and sunny-ish). :D
