sales tax rebate
« on: May 07, 2019, 06:49:53 AM »
BH PhotoVideo now has a credit card that will refund sales tax in many states that it has, in the past, been forced to collect. The sales tax is still paid to the state, but BH gives you an instant rebate if you use the card. Full information can be obtained here.

Be sure not to use that card at a roadside facility that says, "Eat here. Get gas."

The details are always with the devil, or something like that! :coolio:  One card, paid automatically, not a “good” customer for the card company. :p

 I was so tickled to get that message; since I got into photography as a serious hobby about 10 years ago, I have saved a small fortune by buying from B&H.  Washington state + Pierce County taxes add up to just a little over 10%, so it really bummed me out when they changed the online tax law, because that potentially made a huge difference in my spending.  Luckily, by the time that it was passed, I had already bought most everything I needed, but I'm still lusting after a Sony 7RIII. . . :sos:  INTERVENTION NEEDED!  :tears:

To whom it may concern: Perhaps after the next purchase you can create a visible Avatar? :p :D

Some interesting comments from people in the link, Jon. A whole topic of discussion on taxes and how different retailers have handled it with the interweb. I suspect on-line dealers never have audits by the fifty states, much less the thousands of municipalities...

I have bought many items from Samy's Camera because they are located in California and did not collect NY sales tax. Their prices seem to be comparable to B&H. So, now you have an alternative.

Lol...suffering from the same yearnings. Stumbled into an a6000 a few years ago, fell in love with the compact size and great image quality and then got an a6500 and have a nice collection of Sony lenses, some of them full frame, just in case... Keep telling myself that the fact that my current Sonys are so small means that I take them everywhere, and having one’s camera at hand obviously wins out over no camera because it’s big and heavy. 😜

You mean your smart phone?! :laughhard:

Smart phone camera's are like razor blades; they aren't created to "take pictures", they are created to encourage the sale of storage space!!!

I've been debating on this camera. There are several great bundle deals at Amazon. I remind myself that I have my Canon SX730 and that should be enough ... but then all those lenses and things. HELP!

This is why my fancy Nikon, and Sneakers fancy Canon both sit in a box on the shelf.

NOOOOOOOOO! No smart phone photos other then a quick snap of a recipe in a magazine or something else that is meaningless. I can't count the number of times someone with a "smart phone" takes a photo that looks lovely on their little screen and sends it to me with a note, "Please can you use this on the opening slide at church?" I'm tired of telling them it's out of focus, too small to blow up on the large screen, or that I need landscape not portrait, etc. Folks get their feelings hurt and so now I use the thousands of photos that Sneakers took, and some of mine, plus a few from Jim (thank you!) and a couple of other pals who take professional type photos and think of me and *poof* they land in my email box.

I was very, very surprised when I agreed to enlarge a photo that my vet's son took with his smartphone. I don't know which brand of phone he uses, but I was able to make a full-size print on US letter paper (8 ½ x 11) that looked great. I don't have a smartphone but I have no complaints about my Nikon D810.

Many older "smart phones" have pretty sad cameras. But the more expensive, newer ones can take surprisingly good and quite high resolution images.

One of their biggest problems is that everything is in focus (excepting very fast camera shake). But they are not "idiot proof". And none of them can compose worth a darn! Nor do they know which way to capture the 'scene' best. As RHP always said, when there is a 50/50 choice, 90% of the time the wrong one is chosen. Some people don't even know the camera can be held two different ways... :whoosh:

Great cameras do not take great photos. A great photographer, however, can make a camera great again (no political innuendos, please). There is no substitute for a knowledgeable person behind the camera, whatever brand it is.

Also, Ansel Adams (one of my favorite photographers, if not my absolute favorite) stated that the most important tool in his darkroom is the trash can. Mine is full...  :wallbash:
