Netscape Profile Migration
« on: August 05, 2003, 06:11:02 AM »
Netscape's help section on preserving your profile is written for the "other" platform, but can be translated.
QUOTE
    #  Before upgrading, find your existing profile:
Found mine in Old hard drive>Documents>Mozilla>Profiles>name I had give it.slt
QUOTE
    #  Backup the Mozilla directory, if you're moving more than one profile, or the specific profile directory, onto a CD-RW or other medium with sufficient space.
Understood
QUOTE
# Create a new profile_name directory within the Profiles directory on the path C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\
Ignore!  Don't create anything yet.
QUOTE
# Drag the backup salted_name.slt directory into testprofile, the new profile_name directory.
Drag your exsisting profile into Documents>Mozilla>Profiles
QUOTE
# From the Start menu, choose Netscape 7.0 and then choose Netscape Profile Manager.
Open the Netscape folder, double click on NS Profile Manager.
QUOTE
# Click Create Profile and give your new profile the same name as the profile you want to duplicate.
Click Create Profile and give your new profile the exact same name as the profile you just dragged.
QUOTE
# Click Choose Folder and navigate to the profile_name directory you created.
Click Choose Folder and navigate to the profile_name directory you dragged.
QUOTE
# Click Finish.
# Launch Netscape 7.
 Yep, it's there.

Don't do as I have done previously, and Create New and drag the various components. The new will NOT recognize the old that way.  One must use the Profile Migration.

I also found it much easier to install a new Netscape rather than copying the old.  There are various components that referenced the old hard drive and no easy way to change the reference.  One thing (and major to my OS!) was the XPI  Cleanup alias that is in System>Startup Items.  On the iMac there was a dialog box saying the app couldn't be found.  On the 6400, it causes a freeze if it can't be found.  Downloading a new installer at the very beginning would've saved me two or more hours.  Of course, reading the instructions would've helped immensely also!

Thanks Jennie, for the translation. wink.gif

I may be reinstalling Netscape 7 soon. I trashed the 70 some mb inbox file, even though there was nothing in it....and it hasn't been running the same ever since.

Jennie, I followed your/Netscape's instructions to the 'T'!!  The program/Profile Manager absolutely will not allow me to choose my prebuilt Profile.  It keeps telling me that it cannot be found when I click on it and "Finish".

When I 'Delete' the profile, exit the PM and restart it again, it is gone.  Then I start all over by 'Creating a new Profile', name it, 'Choose Folder' and it ADDS ANOTHER profile with the same name.

HOW did you get it to accept the one you already had after dragging it back into the Profiles folder???

Any help/suggestions would be gratefully and eternally appreciated!!!!!!!!!   wallbash.gif  wallbash.gif  wallbash.gif  sad.gif   Thanks a bunch...  Laurel

Laurel:

Let me experiment and I'll get back to you.

I must confess, the major reason I'm moving to Jag is that I am aggravated with NS and, while refusing to use certain other browsers, I continue to wish to surf and have an intergrated mail app at the same time.

I've forgotten, which OS do you use?

Thanks so much, Jennie--I was afraid you wouldn't see that your thread had a recent response  wub.gif

I use both OS's, i.e., 9.2.2 and Jaguar on a G4.  I have actually 'trashed' all references to my profile except what was saved on the CD for reinstalling.  Jaguar's Netscape references the profile on the 9.2.2 boot partition just fine--better cross my fingers here!

As a matter of fact, Netscape coexisted very nicely on both OS's, using the same profile, until I hadn't used X for a while, went into it and reconfigured Netscape back to it.  No problems there but, for some reason, fixing X messed up 9xx.  I still love the old OS and my easily-accessed stuff on the desktop as well as being able to use a couple/few programs that I don't have on X due to expenses or unavailability.  'If one works...?' mentality.  Besides, it's comfortable--been using Macs/Apples for longer than I care to admit  blush-anim-cl.gif  although I love the stability of X and do find myself using it when I don't need the 9xx programs.

Anyway, I do not understand why the Profile Manager in 9 won't adopt the old, very-used profile--it keeps telling me it can't find it when it definitely is there, where it belongs, and wants to build a new one!!!?  I keep trashing them and NS continues to build them...  unsure.gif

Thus my frustration!  I actually trashed the good profile as well as the Netscape folder in 9, restarted, reinstalled NS, closed NS and continued with your/Netscape's instructions, etc., etc., etc.,   wallbash.gif

I agree with you regarding your comment of having both applications integrated into one.  I also really like the appearance/format/configuration/user-friendliness of both 'parts'.  It, too, is 'comfortable'...

One last comment; please don't mess up your machine trying to figure this out, Jennie--I was just hoping there might be a clue as to what I'm doing wrong???  verysad.gif  Laurel

PS:  Tried the Profile Migration as well--nope, nada!  mad.gif
