From Russia With Love
« on: December 12, 2019, 04:26:22 PM »
My iPhone just rang, and before I could even pick it up to answer it stopped ringing. When I looked at the screen there was this alert:

Potential Spam
Missed call

On my iMac's screen a similar alert popped up, only this one identified the call as being from Russia. I do have the number in my recent list on my iPhone, and I just blocked it; but I am way impressed that my iPhone was so alert. What a cool thing. Thanks, Apple.

What carrier do you have? AT&T has started a program (free) that can somehow check numbers, no doubt on a huge database, very quickly and make an 'educated' guess about their validity.

I'm not aware that the iPhone (or any other brand) itself can do much more than check your own list of blocked calls. (Not being aware of something is often a 'state' I visit, however! :blush-anim-cl: ) In that case, I don't think it gives any direct notifications and may just hang up after a shorter ring. That would generate a "Missed call" alert. It is possible to have "alerts" repeated on your Apple hardware, I guess.

We can only hope that these systems do get smarter and less obnoxious! :wallbash: If you have updated to the newest iOS/macOS, you may also have some phone features/functions I don't. Good to see you've got some help, no matter where it comes from!

I use Verizon. I honestly hadn't thought about this being a service from them since they're such a great carrier in this area.  :whistling:   I'll check and see if this is a Verizon perk.

Apparently this is a Verizon service. Who knew?  :dntknw:   But today I apparently called myself and Verizon didn't flag that as spam.  :wallbash:
