Trouble getting/staying logged in
« on: March 26, 2020, 02:59:40 AM »
I noticed that lately when I come here I'm recognized as a guest despite having logged in the day before and choosing "Forever". This is the first time I've ever had this problem.

I dumped cookies but then it wouldn't let me sign in at all telling me "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again." Tried many times by going to other sites first, using new tabs, choosing one month, etc. Finally got in by using the link in an email sent regarding a personal message. It brought up a different log in window which finally let me in.

This isn't part of social distancing is it?   :whistling:

I'll bet this is discussed in a thread somewhere previously but if so, I can't find it. (using Firefox BTW)

Any thoughts?

Are you using any Safari extensions?
    A VPN?
        What version of Safari?
            Have you tried another browser?
How about making a new Safari plist?

More questions after you recover from responding to these... :sweatingbullets:

Krissel, I'm using Firefox 74.0, running OS 10.13.6 and haven't run into this thus far. I'm not sure what to tell you. Restart your Mac? Reinstall Firefox? Does it happen with another browser?

My only other thought is that I've had issues reaching a lot of web sites and receiving similar alerts (with Firefox, Safari and Chrome), and tracked it back to my ISP throttling web traffic.

Most UK ISPs say they have reduced download speed to "make sure everyone can get a connection" during the pandemic because so many people are working from home.

Might yours be doing the same but not telling you?

Don't know if that would affect Kris logging in though.

EDIT: I'm still getting 50Mbps down and 14 up, which is what I usually get.

Well, there's your problem!

So, I'll rephrase my questions:
Are you using any SafariFirefox extensions?
    A VPN?
        What version of SafariFirefox?
            Have you tried another browser?
How about making a new SafariFirefox plist?

Perhaps Firefox has different Privacy settings than just cookies.

Caroline has been having trouble with Firefox on the 2014 MBP Pro after FF installed something called Facebook Container. Apparently it is supposed to stop FB tracking the user. All she found was that everything ran like treacle and it was, basically, a pain in the backside.
I think she must have disabled it, since I haven't heard any cries for help recently  :D

No issues here using Firefox Developer Edition 75 and Mojave on my old MBP. No issues on Safari either. Hard to troubleshoot when we can't duplicate the issue.

What version of FF and what version of the OS are you using, Kris?

Have you tried Safari or Chrome to see if they work?

Rebooting the modem?

Could also try a DNS flush. https://geeksadvice.com/flush-dns/

Hmmm. What OS is she running? I ask because I'm running OS 10.13.6, FF 74.0, and also have Facebook Container installed and running and I’m not having any problems. Maybe she's running another extension that is bumping into FB Container?

Well now, this is interesting.

When I came to TS via my usual bookmark I got the same "Guest" situation. However I immediately went to the Tech Forum anyway to read what you all had posted. I figured I'd try your suggestions first before logging in to reply.

After looking over all your kind and comprehensive ideas  :) , I looked up at the top of the page to see "Hello krissel"!

What the...?   Now it sees me but I didn't log in.

Soooo, after a bit of exploring, I discovered that somehow the problem was related to both bookmarks to TS that I had been using ever since we moved here. Why that should be, I have no idea.

I've created a new one which seems to recognize me upon arrival.    Thank you for all your advice.

I know Kris has solved her problem, but just for the record Caroline's is Mid-2014MB Pro, running High Sierra 10.13.6 - Safari is 74.0 (64 bit) and is "Up to date".

Whatever she did, she's happy with the way it's working, so who am I to interfere?  :D

GREAT!!!
Now, will your new recognition allow your signature/image/icon to return? :dntknw: I'm pretty sure the software allows us to upload a file for that, no externally store graphics required. :whistling:

As long as she's happy and it works. I only run a couple of FF extensions, so I'm guessing that was the issue with Caroline's machine.

I'd love to fix that. What would the link be to upload that file? I have an addy in my profile but obviously it's to an old place on the previous software.

Unfortunately, like a familiar politician, I have erroneously raised your expectations of reality. The way to upload an image is actually in the way you add/edit your signature. I suspect that the only real problem is that the text in your Profile->Signature is a link to a place that once stored an image, either in the forums database or another site. If it was in the database, it probably did not make the transfer when we changed the software. If it is some external site, either the image is no longer there or the site may have changed its 'live-linking' policy. I can only suggest that you edit your Signature with a link to a web-based image.

I visit another forum site that uses this same software and use a dynamic image as my signature. But that image is at my own domain. While the title never changes, the image itself changes every few minutes. My "Signature" text:
