Are these different computers or different partitions on one computer?

It should be your regular Admin password for the computer you are copying to.

Have you searched Keychain?

Start by reading Manage passwords using keychains on Mac and follow the links.

Hopefully, you used it without noticing.

Do you normally have to enter that password when you first start up the Mac? Or, perhaps, after the screen saver has started up?

On the 10.6 partition there's no password...on 10.11 there's one just after start up.

First, be sure you are booted into the macOS El Capitan, 10.11 partition. "About This Mac" should confirm that for you. :)
Look at the Get Info dialog of the file you are trying to move. A screen capture of that dialog would be great, also.

Is that file locked?

If you click on the little "lock" icon (lower, right-hand corner of the dialog), do you get the same 'authentication' dialog?

OK, that confirms the password request is coming from your booted partition.

Last question: What is the "booted partition"? The "About This Mac" will tell you what OS you are using, among other things. What does it show?

Mine shows 10.14.6 (see below), yours may look a bit different and should show 10.6 or 10.11, of course.

OK, so you are being asked for the password on that OS, I think you said there is no password on 10.6, but the computer seems to believe there is.

Have you checked Keychain yet on that partition?

OneTwoThree more questions:
1. What happens if you just press Return three times in that authentication request?
2. How are you booting into the 10.6 partition?
3. Is it happening automatically or do you have to select it among other choices?
