iCloud storage on my iPhone 7
« on: May 02, 2020, 02:10:27 PM »
Hi, Everyone!

I received this message yesterday:
Your iCloud storage is almost full. You have 599.8 MB remaining of 5 GB total storage. Upgrade to 50 GB for $0.99 per month.

Y'all know I haven't a clue about what this amount of storage means, right?

Anyway, I mostly use iCloud to back up my address book and more importantly, the many photos that I take using my cell phone.  Every once in a while, I do go through the photos and I do trash some of them, but I have to admit, my photos are like tribbles.

So.... how many more photos can I store in the Cloud by upgrading?

Thanks!  Stay safe, stay healthy, stay well!
Smiles,
Sooz

Desktop iMac, running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6, 16 GB installed, with Time Machine and SuperDuper! backup on two external hard drives...and I like to bake.

From the web:

So Apple's free 5GB of storage will hold roughly 1,667 3MB photos, and the paid 50GB tier will house about 16,000 images.
Personally, at $12 per year it's a great deal.

Money is in the eye of the beholder. Or something like that...

Personally, I don't have that many pictures that I want to save. I do take several every few weeks, but usually to share with some one about something I'm working on. Once I've shared them, I delete them; they've served their purpose. I did pay for SWMBO's 50 GB, it's more important that she always avoids any 'warnings' if I can help it!

You've probably done the math and discovered that 50 is ~10 times as much as 5... The number of images that can fit into that space greatly depends on the sizes of their file. Just remember, newer cameras almost always have higher file sizes because of their ever increasing resolution. Just like computer memory, you'll never have enough disk space, whether it's on your desk or in somebody else's building/'cloud'.

Little known secret: Cameras in our phones and 'cloud' storage were invented to 'encourage' us to take way more pictures than we need and then be too lazy to do anything with them, especially culling! "But they are MY pictures! They are unique!" Of course, worthy of keeping is a completely different subject. :Devilish: The real purpose of the technology is to sell new products and space to keep stuff we didn't know we needed. The same thing is visible in the proliferation of self-storage places... Retails golden rule: Buy stuff now (even if you have to borrow to do it) and then pay some one to store it for you! :laughhard:

Thanks, Kimmer and Jim, for ringing in here!

Hmmmmm, "50"...10 times as much as 5.... why, that's MATH!  LOL   :eusa_dance:

I've always been into photography, from my Brownie to my Rollei to my Nikon to my cell phone's camera.  Yuppers, I need my pictures!    Gotta take pics of my baked goods and such, too!

Thank you again!

Awww, Jim, you sweet talker!  If y'all lived closer, I'd be happy to share! The quality goes a bit downhill with the shipping process overnight prices!
